@freemo The Front Door, certainly.

Any page that's presented to new users during the account creation process.

The About This Server page, maybe add the image or a smaller resized one there.

If could be arranged, in the joinmastodon.org text describing QOTO instance.

joinmastodon.org/#getting-star

There is a little bit of room there, so maybe in words, spelling out the acronym meaning?

@freemo Those are good, thank you.

The only thing I would add is spell out the STEM acronym, as people might have found QOTO simply from it's prominent position on joinmastodon.org's Instance list / Join page - and not realize that this is not a typical, general audience focused server.

Found a nice visual one.

I think with all the non-english posts around here we need to make a few new rules in order to keep things safe for moderation and keeo the timeline interesting. I would like everyones feedback.

1) You must be able to speak english fluently enough to interact with english moderators and english commentors

2) You must have a STEM interest in being here (though not required to post on any one subject).

Also note it is still very hard to moderate non-english posts for now im using a translator but it makes my job MUCH slower...

Would you say these two points apply to you.

@realcaseyrollins I think it we seriously look at the Universe, and take the time to quiet down and reflect, the wonder of it all is very humbling.

That can be a very positive development for a person. Puts one in perspective.

Have a good day! 🌄 🌠

@freemo Oh, you do realize what I meant. 😎

MH issues it seems to me.

@pschwede Thanks for the post, I usually head to The Guardian first thing in the morning, it's my favourite news source.

But I have been so busy and absorbed by fediverse that it's been days without a visit there. Or the other faves I follow.

The UK election is dreadful, if the polls giving a large lead to the Conservatives turn out right at the end. The party is destroying Britain.

@freemo Good morning and thank you for cleaning up!

I had to use the Mute button earlier on, it was too much for me. One line timestamps? Weirdness.

Might be a good time to clarify to people what each of the post privacy settings do?

From blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/07/

Like on a TV remote control, sometimes the Mute button is a big relief. 📢 🚫

Learn more about the Fediverse?

That's the part many of us here inhabit - the Mastodon instances, and many other sites, serving different needs.

"Fediverse
is a portmanteau of two words “federation” and “universe”

It is a common name for federated social networks running on free open software on a myriad of servers across the world. Historically, this term has included only microblogging platforms supporting a set of protocols called OStatus. This didn't do justice to a large number of projects that federate, share same values and are reasonably popular. With the appearance and wide adoption of a new standard protocol called ActivityPub it makes no sense to further divide the federated world into “OStatus” and “non-OStatus” projects. This guide unites all interconnected federated networks under one term “Fediverse”. "

"The Future?

At the moment, several projects in the space are working to adopt new supplementary protocols, with the intent of building better bridges between one another. The proposed development might end up looking like this:"

There's The Federation -- and The Fediverse.

"Many newcomers to the federated web may hear of a casual reference to the fediverse, and may be curious about what that term means. A simple explanation might be that it’s a portmanteau of “federation” and “universe”, but it’s actually a little bit more complicated than that. Let’s dive into the nature of this beast, along with some of the history that comes with it.

At present, there are two supernetworks in the federated social communication space, and they run on different protocols. They are known as The Fediverse, and The Federation. While both supernetworks function in similar ways and even have similar aims, they each come from a different history of development, and by extension, a different stack. The overlapping series of networks can be referred to in macro as The Free Network."

Ever wonder what is out there in The Federation?

"The Federation refers to a global social network composed of nodes that talk to each other. Each of them is an installation of software which supports one of the federated social web protocols. "

@Sphinx Yes, very true.

I find differences, fairly noticeable, even from North America compared with parts of Europe I have visited.

@kareny Hello Kareny, welcome to the new network. 😉

A lot of places, good people and interesting stuff to read and talk about.

So different from the stuffiness of the larger soc media sites.

Have fun!

@khird
It might be only paranoia on my side, Kyle, but that's what I decided when I saw the situation, and it seemed strange to me.

The real ones we should worry about, the surveillance apparatus, they will collect tons of things easily from all the public posts we do.

@Sphinx

@Sphinx you are welcome. I haven't bought anything on ebay for soem time, the shipping tends to be a bit too high for me.

A good place to check for that would be companies reselling IT gear, returned from lease. Some excellent systems, Business grade, and with much lower prices after being used for 3 years or so.

This is one such reseller here in Canada. Was looking thru today, they have wonderful gear.

@Sphinx No, I don't think it's weird - it could be a cultural thing.

That for you, it seems people speaking in English here might be more relaxed and friendly than the Mandarin posting ones.

Formality does vary from culture to culture.
