@freemo

Apple and Google are the worst of the corporate spionage and control, domination today.

Vintage Microsoft CD, a popular view earlier on. 😛

Lol, yep.

In the 90's, Microsoft was the incarnation of Evil. A ruthless and domineering corporation, I was pissed at them frequently.

Times change. I remember when I saw the very first mention of a new startup, a new fanged search engine called this strange name, Google.

Search was good, webpage was minimal and fast. What a nice relief from the absurd bloated Yahoo search page of the time!

And this new kid company had a nice motto, Do Not Be Evil.

Which, 20 years later, is what they turned into with a vengeance.

Microsoft, on the other hand, had big changes in management. Evil guy Steve Ballmer is long gone, good riddance.

And I consider them a cool company, today. Wish I had bought some shares 4 years ago!

@susi123 Don't reget it, Susi - Never to late to start and learn new things.

I really enjoy traveling and being able to communicate with people in their own language. Even if I can only speak a little bit, they appreciate the effort and courtesy.

Get started - there are many great tools. 😉

Duolingo is FREE and you can find many languages.

I was taking daily lessons in French while travelling in the Spring, and it did help - I learned a bit of French but many, many years ago.

Do you like to read and write letters? I use and love a penpal app called "Slowly".

You can find penpals from all over the world, and practice a language too. recommended!

getslowly.com/en to take a look.

@susi123 I am so glad to hear that, Susi! Wonderful.

I think the Bing Translator is much nicer than the Google one. bing.com/translator/

** Top Reasons?

1. It is NOT a Google property.

2. It allowed me to paste long letters, with up to 5,000 characters, which I wrote in one language where I can express myself better. Then used the Translator to bring it to my friend's native language, which I do speak, but at a lower proficiency level

3. The machine translated text wasn't perfect, but by using a native language, I felt free to express my thoughts much more freely, conveying meaning and nuance, sentiment, the way I liked it.

4. I would copy the text from Bing page, paste it into my penpal letter writing editor and scan, proofread and edit it to correct any anomalous errors or weird language from the machine.

Excellent for letters to our friends abroad. 😉

She was the one who started me on this route, surprising me with a full letter in my native language. Wow! 😺

We got very lyrical as a result. ❤️ ❤️

@design_RG your translater link is very useful

thanks a lot.

You are welcome, the credit goes to @binsrc , who found the easy way to do it - snapshot on a post right above here.

Have fun! 😄
@khird

Part of my logic goes to a recent discussion we are having, now moved to QOTO's Discourse Forums site. discourse.qoto.org/t/nov-2019-

QOTO is primarily English language, and posts in foreign languages strain the moderation team, who might not speak them.

I fully understand the Fun of practicing our native languages, or practicing a new one you are just learning, but an instance located in a country where the language is currently spoken will have a lot more content, and friendly users to chat to.

Like it shows, on this snapshot -- a Brazilian user defining Fediverse:

"It's a Twitter without Nazis, and apparently I would have a beer with everyone." 😉 🍻

Found a site that could help people speaking different languages (Portuguese, Spanish, French, etc) locate an instance that has users and posts in their language.

Could be handy!

There are Brazilian and Portuguese speaking system admins posting helpful tips in portuguese - a nice resource. See

@teknonomicon Fit people, as food will be much more scarce and you have to work hard for it, i can see fitness being a side benefit. 🙊

@teknonomicon I love this type of stories. You never know, getting used to the idea of what it could be like helps adapt if SHTF.
