Went looking for some references, I recall reading a really good article describing the situation and the Mastodon developer dilemma on what to do, when Gab appropriated the open source code for Mastodon (which he couldn't oppose, with it being open source) and forked it into their own version.

- pueden seleccionar un tema para su instancia, y establecer un tono local, o ejecutar una instancia más relajada y genérica.

- La moderación se realiza principalmente en el contenido generado localmente. No tenemos control sobre lo que otras personas en instancias remotas publican, por lo que es mejor no preocuparse por ello a menos que afecte a un usuario local.

- si esto sucede, un usuario local está siendo acosado por uno remoto, por ejemplo, podría ponerse en contacto con su equipo de moderación local, reportar las postes infractoras.

- Los moderadores locales examinarán las publicaciones, y si se consideran ofensivos, podrían ponerse en contacto con el equipo de moderación de instancias remotas y discutir el asunto.

- they can select a theme for their instance, and set a local tone, or run a more relaxed and generic instance.

- moderation is done mostly on content generated locally. WE don't have control over what other people in remote instances post, so it's best to not worry about it unless it affects a local user.

- if this happens, a local user is being harassed by a remote one, for example, they could contact their local moderation team, report the offending post(s).

- The local moderators will look at the posts, and if deemed offensive they might contact the remote instance moderation team and discuss the matter.

- with their cooperation, we can hopefully solve the matter and avoid any further escalation.

- if the remote admin and mods are not cooperative, as a last resort we could disconnect from that instance, no longer receiving their messages or sending them any locally created messages.

This should resolve the issues hopefully.

That sounds perfectly correct, but an unlisted post will not be casually discoverable by people browsing the public timelines, so it would remain obscure unless someone knew about them, specifically.

For the Arxiv bots, unlisted wouldn't work for that reason, although it would clean up the local timeline.

Yes, that sure is some serendipity at work. And the fact that you joined an instance that has a pretty liberal federation policy -- we only block an instance (currently two only, I believe) if there were problems with them, and they could not be resolved.

A lot of places have erected walls and blocked gab and their peripheral instances (yes ,there are some) since they first joined the fediverse, uninvited.

It was a big discussion at the time, I wasn't here yet but there are good articles on the net relating how it happened and what people said, did at the time.

That would make sense, to avoid clogging local timelines. But there isn't a privacy setting for Toots that matches that yet -- Federated but not local.

Unlisted would not show on Federated, and would make them hard to discover, unless the person knew they were there. And the next levels are even not occult.

The Groups feature is present in Gnu Social, but not in any Mastodon version that I have seen or heard about, lol.

So it's not an easy thing to be added.
