Hacky folks, please resist finding ways to scrape the fediverse, build archives, automate tools and connect to people via bot without their consent.

Just resist the urge. Because you're not going to think to check for robots.txt, but you ought to, that's how we communicate we don't want to be involved. You're probably not going to bother to read the various terms of service for the instances you touch, many of which explicitly ask you not to do any scraping or automated activity beyond normal use of the service. You're not going to know to respect people using the NoBot hashtag that was meant to prevent automated follows. You're certainly not going to parse user profiles and pinned posts to learn how people like to be approached, what will get you blocked, or even think to heavily throttle your activity because instances are falling over in response to load.

Whatever your thing is, make it 100% opt-in. Make it appropriate for a significantly more at-risk user than you are. Make sure it forgets things, purges info about servers it can't contact, can't operate in any sort of logged-in mode where consent is an issue.

We will straight up help advertise your cool thing if it respects users properly and takes the time to consider the safety and preferences of every person involved. There are a lot of fun, thoughtfully-designed toys! And there are a lot of people really tired of having to come and tell you off when you wanted to help, honestly. Help yourself and ask around before you flip on your cool new thing, let folks point out what you're missing.

If anyone here needs help and support, I run a site theintersection.app that provides help, guidance and support for people in the tech industry with their mental health. Do not suffer alone.

I’m also building a series of Voices where real people share, openly or anonymously, their stories. Your participation is welcome!

If you're disabled with chronic pain and using a small "bed desk" (I don't know how it's called) for your laptop so you have no weight on you, may I know which one you got and if you're satisfied with it? :BoostOK:

I've been thinking about it for months actually as it would change my life and allow me to use my laptop way more often, but didn't look it up yet as I'd rather ask disabled folks first than reading online comments!

Thank you :blobwolfreach:

@NadiaBernaz I wrote a short thread on #Twitter. I believe #TwitterMigration hurts 2 groups. Those monetising because of their Twitter fame, and those who need Twitter to be heard. I want to focus on the latter.

The 2nd group contains a lot of subgroups. Black Twitter, #Disability Twitter, #HumanRights defenders, dissidents, #trans activists, asylum seekers, #refugees, whistleblowers etc.

I can’t leave.

Multiplying someone's good idea:
"To help make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same."

Having worked in infra for many years, I appreciate you posting this, and I can say a huge increase in demand/throughput can be pretty stressful, even for well-prepared teams. <3

It took >30 minutes for me to read through each ballot initiative and candidate statement for my CA ballot this year. DON’T wait until the last minute to start your ballot or you might give up. If you are #voting in-person or planning to fill out your mail-in ballot on Tuesday, check out ballotpedia.org/Main_Page (thanks @ifilljustice )

The article linked below showed up in my TL on the bird.
Some of the leaders in my org have been talking up Platform Engineering. On op-ed shared was so full of jargon it turned me off. So, when I saw this article, I figured I'd give it another chance to help me understand what is meant.
Half-way thru, it does make sense, and it describes a significant body of work my broader org has built and offered as a Platform. It's actually pretty cool!.
Hope you find this interesting fi you choose to read (or have read).

Hi y'all! I'm not a newbie to tech in general, but I often feel like a newbie due to the breadth and depth of technology, especially software (and infrastructure)!
I sort of fell into IT through a random job that promoted me based on a "logic" test. :D
I have experience in , , some , a tiny old crumb of , but most recently / . *NIX wins, imho. PC for home, Mac for work. Spent some time in the . The team I'm on for work is in a decent-sized retailer, and our focus is Observability. and some cool home-grown products. We support internal customers (other teams and platforms), and I love answering questions!
I'm married to my lovely wife, and our babies all have fur. I live in a brick house built in 1888. I love old houses, even though there's not a right angle or standard size left!
If it's horror, I love it - movies, books, objects. I'm a little at heart (though I'm an Old Bat now).

Interesting. I tooted that I didn't care for EM, and someone suggested that I "smell jewish"[sic]. I'm not Jewish. I'm not offended because being Jewish is not a bad thing, but I am confused about how one "smells" like any particular group/culture/religion. I used the mute feature. Oh well.😕

@freemo Hi! I'm not a scientist, per se, but an infra software engineer. EM is just trash. He's making some pretty dumb, destructive decisions about the bird site.

@design_RG Hi. Did you create that visualization? What tech/app are you using? I do observability work at the moment, and got a little excited.

Getting started here. Gonna lurk a bit and see what folks are like.
