Hey all! I'm an Australian PhD student working in supramolecular chemistry (mainly photoswitch related, with lots of supporting NMR studies). Alongside the chemistry I play music, dance, and have interests in politics/international relations/global security (any open-source analysts hanging around here?).

I've tried mastodon on and off a few times before this account, but never really managed to find a critical mass of enough others with shared interests to keep me here. With all the interest M's been picking up recently, it seemed like it might be worth trying again!

I wish every guy would understand the fact that girls don't walk around all dressed up looking cute and wearing makeup just to impress men

I wanted to introduce everyone to my friend from Facebook I just convinced to join @SadickAlheri

I will let him post his own / but he is a good facebook friend from Africa. I know we have a nice little native African STEM / scholar group here on QOTO. So I hope you all welcome him to the crowd.

@johnpotter yeah. That's the idea. Here in Nigeria, politicians and Priests alike are turning humanity upsidedown. It hurts to see youths support people and call then their religion. Simple things of life a getting unnecessarily complicated

@wanatoi well- I would hope no one appropriate godlike status to men- whether politicians, doctors, or priests (did I miss anyone). If so, we have a lot more work to do. And probably do anyway.

In this time we live, the need to demystify leadership and peace, drives me to see good in all. That I care so much about my Sons is enough to make me know that with a little effort, I can do same to ANYONE. The idea of appropriating godlike status to men, thereby creating mysteries around things that should be simple, has to stop.

I welcome us all to another week of seeing our possibilities together as one people.

Whoever will read this, I love you.

Seems like a empty phrase? It isn't. Never will. You are faulty and imperfect but I love you.

Whoever your life will touch today, make it a tiny bit better and try to smile and be nice. Some of us will have a terrible day and a smile or a phrase can change a life.
And if you really need help, don't be afraid to ask.

Seems like a good editorial about the scandal washingtonpost.com/blogs/post- Being a Catholic, I tire of people trying to tear down the Church to promote their own agenda. They appear short-sighted in what Catholicism offers. OTOH, I really wonder if the institution (not the tradition) can reform itself - most vested interests and institutions cannot (which is why I'm a cynical libertarian). But its not just a matter of corruption or inequality here - its the face of true evil. The Church had better think about the long-term consequences here. (and no, this is not a time for liberals to start demanding a whole new liturgy or other radical changes that have nothing to do with the scandal).

In terms of that old teleportation question about whether the consciousness transfers if your atoms are perfectly reconfigured I've actually flip flopped since taking up a physicalist position.

I used to believe that you're consciousness wouldn't transfer but now I'm certain that it would. Assuming physicalism your consciousness is simply stored in your brain and whatever it is that makes you a conscious being would be reproduced after the teleportation effectively transfering your consciousness.

However, now we run into the issue of what would to happen if we were to create 2 perfect instances of someone, following this logic we would have bodies sharing the same consciousness. Which is not necessarily impossible in itself but once you get into the issue of the bodies going processing information not privvy to the other body we run into some issues. This seems entirely alien to me as a consciousness inside a single body but perhaps it's not impossible for a shared consciousness to act on different information depending on which body its in. Maybe in effect you're creating a discrete but double consciousness.

No idea how the fuck mastodon works but would love to hear some people's thoughts about this.

@freemo you’re right and same here. I would like to interact all the community here at QOTO. 😊

#introduction

Hey! I'm an Australian researcher with a PhD in Japanese Studies, specialising in the history of and contemporary developments within the popular culture industries of Japan. My thesis specifically looked at the evolution of the "magical girl" genre and the cross-media franchising of one example of the genre, 'Madoka Magica'.

My forthcoming publications include an analysis of the image of Joan of Arc in manga, and a critical examination of the 'Sanrio Danshi' media franchise.

So there are different people from different countries and do not care about grammatical mistakes. Cool, I like it! 🤞🏻👍🏻

well lets do this propperly (in advance idc about grammar). im intrested in political discussion ( dw on a nice and polite level) on just about everything. that should do the trick

@commandelicious @freemo I see qoto is picking up quite a number of new users. Wish my instance got some :-)
