My favorite quote from Harry Potter (books) was when they reveal Severus still loves Lilly after all these years. Some back story, when a wizard falls in love his patronus changes to match that of the person they love. Lilly's patronus was a silver doe.

"So the boy… the boy must die?" asked Snape quite calmly.

"And Voldemort himself must do it, Severus. That is essential."

Another long silence. Then Snape said, "I thought… all these years… that we were protecting him for her. For Lily."

"We have protected him because it has been essential to teach him, to raise him, to let him try his strength," said Dumbledore, his eyes still tight shut. "Meanwhile, the connection between them grows ever stronger, a parasitic growth: Sometimes I have thought he suspects it himself. If I know him, he will have arranged matters so that when he sets out to meet his death, it will truly mean the end of Voldemort."

Dumbledore opened his eyes. Snape looked horrified.

"You have kept him alive so that he can die at the right moment?... You have used me… I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to keep Lily Potter's son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter…"

"But this is touching, Severus," said Dumbledore seriously. "Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?"

"For him?" shouted Snape. "Expecto Patronum!"

From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe: She landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office, and soared out of the window. Dumbledore watched her fly away, and as her silvery glow faded he turned back to Snape, and his eyes were full of tears.

"After all this time?"

"Always," said Snape.

I ball like a little baby every time I see the scene in Harry Potter where they reveal Snape's backstory. I relate most to Snape as a character for exactly this reason

@Rovine
"Before you can save the world, you gotta save yourself" this hit me.

@freemo @inditoot

@freemo @inditoot @_lunawinters I have a friend. He couldn't finish college. He tried to do programming but constantly run into frustrations of poor instructions and lack of help and encouragement from his college. He spends most of his time playing video games and "running away from reality" that is his own future, let alone reality of the world. If he tries to face reality, all that greets him is the "reality" that there's no place in this world for him. No one wants an unmotivated "lazy ass" like him. He is not able to function in this society and likewise this society has no place for him.

And yet he is my absolute best friend. He talked me out of feeling worthless when I couldn't make anything work. He nudged me into game jams and gave me ideas for me to work on. He played games with me and helped distracting me on days when I feel like shit, not just shit about myself but shit about society and "reality". Everytime I slip, I got back on my feet because he yanked me out of "reality" and helped me experience a better way of life, proving to me that it is totally possible to feel better about yourself, and all the more proof that before you can save the world, you gotta save yourself first.

He's totally running away from reality, but in his case, I hope he won't ever have to face it. If anything, reality doesn't deserve his gift.

@_lunawinters Yea but did you even know how you felt before the show either? :)

@freemo @_lunawinters

🤔 Hmm, Well all I wanted to say that help the needy people and if people help each other we won't have any news like people are suffering but reality is reality.

Although all I want that people should help each other as you do and having a sense of reality will motivate them to help each other more

Seems is seeing a third wave of users coming in now. Back when we peaked during the indian exodus we had about 200 new users a day or more, it fell back down to 32 users a day as of 2 days ago, but now today we are back up to 79 new users a day right now! Very cool.

We have also seen a nice spike in toot count, which is good to see, especially considering all the excellent STEM content I see in my steam, loving it!

This pattern seems normal for qoto everytime we have a new wave of users to mastodon. We first get an initial wave, it settles down, then we get a second wave as users learn about the network and decide to migrate over to qoto. It is all very exciting to see.

I'm curious about how this comes about though. Is it just people learning about the network, word of mouth, or perhaps some other factor. As a Data Scientist I crave more data purely out of curiosity.

Either way, welcome new users!

Interesting fact of the day: The color of a turkeys head changes drastically from a ocean blue to a bright red depending on the turkeys mood.

Reading a 2013 paper about modelling the wax moth (Galleria mellonella) for Klebsiella infection studies and I'm just wondering how the seed of such an idea is sown in one's mind. I'm sure it requires a lot of reading and interpreting and discussing it with several people, but the process itself, say, of drawing inferences from all such things and finally reaching a desired set of objectives to be pursued, is just so fascinating.

Of course, it involves long mundane periods where you feel like nothing is ever going to work out and that might take a toll on anyone. But to finally see something work, even if for a bit, and then some more, and try to fit it all together. Ugh. So good.

@immistermanager Welcome to the network, please reach out if you need any help or just want to chat.

Am I the only one who gets random urges to work on wave equations even though I have absolutely no need for it at the moment?

Just a reminder everyone, is currently holding nominations for its moderator opening for the next week. Feel free to nominate yourself or others.

We will also hold a second election after this one where individuals who dont currently qualify can also run.

So one of my great paternal grandparents was the founder of a town out in massachusetts. Being the male line and all I still carry his last name and coat of arms.

I really should visit the town, maybe they will have a parade for me (joking of course).

just moved from the #2 spot on joinmastodon.org to the #1 spot. I believe this is calculated based on how fast an instance is growing. Seems we are not just one of the largest mastodon instances but we are also now the fastest growing one.

That's so cool!
