There will always be a specter looming over mastodon in the form of an unanswered question: What is social media for? Or put better, What do we want social media to be?

If it's just a place to scream into the nether, then it really doesn't matter who's listening to you.

If it's more than that, if it's a place for communities to collaborate and communicate; and I vibe with this more, then we will need to build it to be that sort of place.

"Commodifying the fediverse" - not $elling to companies but $haring with "Partners" #quote

"Meta never sells user data, right? It says so right there in their Terms of Service. What they do instead is share data with select partners, and some of those partners are advertisers. Sharing user data is part of the value proposition when they sign the ad buy. If Meta can share fediverse data, too, that increases the value of those partnerships. And Threads’ supplemental privacy policy claims the right to do just that."

This meme has crossed my feed in a number of places lately. I’m sharing it for debate, not for approval or agreement. If you share from my post, please leave my commentary intact. This has been a public service announcement.

is very nearly a straw man. I’m willing to concede that there are some people who treat like a religion, but their numbers are tiny and they have zero influence on the conduct of research AFAICT. Anti-science who come up with memes like this, OTOH, are numerous and disturbingly influential.

It’s also amusing how the meme assumes is a gold standard against which other intellectual pursuits must be measured. The author assigns to the same unquestionable authority he accuses others of assigning to science.

So I’ll stake my claim: scientific β€”in the literal sense of the study of methodsβ€”has done more to illuminate “how we know what we know” in the last couple of centuries than formal epistemology has done in millennia. If this be scientism, make the most of it.

To get reliable answers from #chatgpt, one needs to state the question/describe your problem in the most precise way possible.

By doing so, I often find myself not even sending the question as this process helped me find the actual solution. A glorified rubber duck! πŸ¦†

TEST YOUR OWN FEDIVERSE - SEE NOTIFICATIONS FOR NEW POSTS FOR 1 WHOLE DAY !

I almost dare you to see what people put out there as victims no longer looking for solutions.

Had to take some off πŸ”• because that 1-way blah blah is not good for change and not actually constructive in learning.

Even the shit-posters can do better than you 'real' people :ablobheadshake: ... shit poasters have humour, learning points, speed and are more themselves - really feel it! Of course you think the Internet is a place. You don't understand it like technology in general given your long comments. The Internet is an elaborate interconnection of inanimate telecommunication devices, everything else is your own problem in your own head. When the power goes out, the internet ceases to exist, that means it's not a place. The psyop of making you believe you are inhabiting something in your brain started with even the naming of "MySpace" and "Fakebook". They moved slightly closer to truth with "The Cloud". I find it interesting you are so interested in this topic yet so off-base.

'Free lunch' is where you are the dinner later...

So when you register for something as free lunch, you are often being mined for your demographics (also mixed other things + / -)

Not sure if there is a term better for that mining.

ABOUT FREE BROKEN THINGS + LESS AND LESS GRATEFUL FOR IT

WHEN FREE IS BROKEN IT SHOULD BE OK FOR USERS TO SAY:

πŸ’¬ "WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX IT NOW IT'S BEEN DELAYED?"

AND EXPECT REPLY OR UPDATES TO CONTINUE...

=========
Intro:
==========
Here are some lessons for people who think free means they don't have to answer or maintain their shit and expect people to remain grateful to them (which maybe they were a beginning THE MOST GRATEFUL before but slowly people run out the tank being less responsive).

So there is some +/- to what I'm referring to and will be more in your own context and story-line to use in future situations BUT ALL THE SAME SHIT IS HERE and the points are all lessons that people can learn from and even remember from as experiences.

================
LET THE LESSONS BEGIN
AND PHRASES REMEMBERED!
====================

1 β™  Free doesn't mean you should be grateful forever

If you server admin goes on holiday or AWOL / MIA (for weeks) and not responding to your DM's you can't just stay in 'grateful land' forever.
It is a bit worrying with no profile activity on server and mods not having a clue (or claiming not to or that they are not his keeper when clearly they should be keeping the server and users - "no I'm just a spam swatter" yeah nice one, great deflection 🏸

2 β™  Deliberate evasion - you have to call this as some point if not evil or it's passive - still you have to see evasion for what it is

3 β™  "Yeah you can go elsewhere if you want" ALSO a "THIS SHIT" as example of real life where "you can leave if you want" rather them answer WHERE IS THE F-ING ADMIN I'VE DM'D HIM MULTIPLE TIMES AND POSTED PUBLICLY...
and low and behold a few days later comes back online and says "Did you ask me a question" as if he just looked at his account yesterday or remembered he had a server (not even going back to see my DM's)

Yes some people might want to leave but it's at all helpful to leave from the lack of comms, bad work etc IF IT GOING TO BE THE SAME EVERYWHERE (people are measurably non-communicative or if they don't have to and have the keys why stick around to talk?)...

I'm proud I say the following phrase also

4 β™  "Free bad work is still bad work" when anyone says "you should be grateful here"

5 β™  gratefulness decreases as time goes on in the bad work spectrum and bad comms continuing ...

ℹ️ So remember these for the next time - surely - because people are crap or not serious or not interested even when they run the place... and they have their ups and downs and don't want to call it themselves...

Language Imperfections - Multi-meanings and Multiple uses - Careful !

Careful of flaws / multi-purposed usage of language by different people.

It's natural to have these variations for Language isn't perfect and also people aren't so give people some slack (you / they / language is imperfect"):

1/ Careful of multi-meanings or even euphemisms / similar expressions (almost every word has 3 or more meanings, sometimes 10!). So as a sentence we have to accept a lot of combinations and room for error.

2/ How things are written and how it's interpreted are often 2 different things so again expect it AND expect to balance the 2.
Language is not a 1 shot kill tool - unless it's yes or no and even then goes wrong and has to be adjusted again or re-asked properly.

3/ Language via Internet (signals over wire / wireless)
Something ON more than OFF can seem animated and well again in the meaning of animates - yes in some sense we are animated or reflecting / sending signal of us in many ways genuinely. Less animated by text but yes we send our selves in some sense and perspective and that is regularly (internet is hardly down or it is now more up and on than down / off).

3/ Adding more words to a signle term or sentence can help ambiguous or multi-used words.
Imagine newspaper headline use the inverse to strike use people emotions from lack of words (the skip a lot and put it in big letters).

Mr. X said Y (oh no) and then you read or talk to Mr, X and it's totally different.

So adding works to a term or meaning helps. Recently I said to someone something like "Internet is a place" but maybe for many of us it isn't or we weigh it differently. So adding a word

Internet is a "Physical place" as a place in our home or coffee shop we used to go to etc... but ultimately mostly they are right, we are just sending signals from a static place even though servers are a 'physical place' - we are not there but yep signals most ON than OFF animate use somewhat so we appear a form or mirror ONLINE.
We "go to the Internet as physical place in our house, no longer elsewhere to even meet and do networked gaming or events as the default.

4/ Language is what ever I say it is - which means to some extent "I use it how I feel" even though there is a strict definition or way (even though it can be still ambiguous as words are made from other words) but yes how someone uses fuck is different according to how they feel or even hidden and jokingly or for testing someone (momentary language)... so this point is to reflect not taking language all at it's apparent face value though it's hard to remember that we often do assume everyone uses it the same way just because it's the same language.

It also turns out I was using PeerTube all WRONG. I assumed your instance had to follow the other instance to subscribe to channels, this isn't true! Simply copy the original peertube video link into your instance's search and through the magic of the fediverse it will allow you to not only watch the video but subscribe to the channel! Wow!

Just an update for posterity here that it was Windows Updates and the associated driver updates that inevitably follow that led to a catastrophic failure the other day.

The UPS seems OK after all. Oh the joys of troubleshooting as a microscopist and patch clamper. My assumption is always that something physical electrical chemical is to blame...rather than thinking first as an IT guy and updating drivers.

To think I am four years plus into this content creation thing and still not savy enough to not have a day like that one.

What to do about banks cheating all life?

Anyone have any ideas what to do about and not using money so much - I'm sure you know how it's cheating all of us so no need for me to explain - just a solution or what best you think is the way (can DM me) because it really needs something solid.
Thanks ❓

Money (creation of debt) is like a bucket leaking water as you try filling it with more money. Banks sell debt basically and ruins the liquidity in whole system devaluing it / us / our work all connected to money 🏦 .

TEXT IN HUMANITY - The interface to people is the biggest problem. Just text is measurably inhuman / doesn't work...

tldr: YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT [with text] but WE DON'T GET WHAT WE NEED (warmth / trust / love from the people in a more-felt way like in audio it can be)

Also we need more excuse to talk to each other. Much like families in small village... the cross-pollination really helps keep all going as people say "Hey I have one of those" when you merely mention "I need something". It's easier than making a whole system as in passing it can be done if there is regular work going on...

But back to the main point that through TEXT only is actually bad ALTHOUGH YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT (Y/N answers mostly) but WE DON'T GET WHAT WE NEED (warmth / trust)
