I wish I had more great #worldwetlandsday content for you #today, but I’m sick and struggling to make it through the work day. I did get to #teach a virtual classroom of 4th year students about how we do conservation science and I spent the afternoon in a grad student’s proposal defence helping her make her #wetlands research as impactful as possible. But I’m pretty burnt out and sick folks 😢. We have so much work to do to #SaveOntarioWetlands
Had a nice visit with #green Party MPP @mikeschreiner@twitter. He spoke with my #gradstudents about the importance of #wetlands and #ecology , the danger of #compensation policy, what is happening to the #greenbelt , and the outsized importance of small, isolated #wetlands for #waterquality

#today we decorated “gingerbread” houses made with graham crackers. We went #Tobogganing at a park in the #sunshine. We played on the swings and came home to #hotchocolate with #marshmallows and #popcorn and a movie on #disneyplus. Good day.
#today I agreed to do a Facebook Live streamed discussion with #ontario MPP Mike Schreiner from the Ontario #greenparty about the importance and vulnerability of #wetlands. It will be this #friday at 12:30 Eastern if you want to see me talk about my favourite subject. @ontariogreens #conservation #biodiversity #climate
Deep roots. We think of #conservation as a relatively young scientific enterprise - it didn’t have an organized professional society until the mid 1980s. But George Perkins Marsh wrote about the #anthroposcene in his 1864 book #man and #nature When he described humans as a “new geographical force.” Ray Dasmann, over 50 years ago, was talking about #socioecologicalsystems ”environmental conservation based on ecological knowledge and social understanding is required.” Know your #history !
#today I taught my first in person class since Winter 2018. I wore my earrings made by my dear friend for luck. You’ll have to ask the #students how it went. I somehow had no difficulty filling the time and winging it when the Online learning platform #Learn had login issues 😒. But I was mainly keeping an eye on my #Aranet4. #CO2 went from 500 at the start of the lecture to 800 by the end. Glad we’re the first class in there in the mornings!
I went to my office #today for the first time in ages and on-boarded our new #technician. It was a chaotic day and tomorrow I will be #teaching in person for the first time since Winter 2018. Bit out of practice. Hoping I’m not too rusty. Watching #MayTree #acapella videos on #youtube and trying not to think about it. 🫣
#Today we went to the #conservation area and explored the #iceformation - it was #beautiful and also #fun to crack the giant plates of #ice.
Out on the mudflats of the drained reservoir.
Important to appreciate local natural areas.
We made vanilla sprinkle #icecream #today with the #kitchenaid stand mixer. Blended in gummy bears and then packed it into a round dish to deep freeze into a knock off #marbleslab #icecreamcake. Tomorrow we eat it!
I woke up #today and browsed a paper on #nanoplasitics my friend @jennipro shared, did 30 min of #yoga with #DownDogApp, and am now waking up sleepy kiddos for #breakfast. Toaster Strudels anyone? sciencedirect.com/science/arti... It’s the 7 y anniversary of my Dad’s passing, and I still miss him everyday. Trying to honour his memory and live life well #grief #mourning #dad

#Today I worked on critical reflection prompts for my #conservationbiology class in PebblePad and spent way, way too long googling photos of #blackfootedFerrets. Dang are they ever cute. Sad they’re so #endangered

I let predictive text determine my New Year’s Resolution and it said “I will stop taking things for granite.” And, you know what? That’s bang on! I’m sick of all this schist.

In my house, my husband does most of the cooking. This #barredowl wants to know “who-cooks-for-you?”

A big part of my advice to students on #scientificwriting is that less is more.
Don’t open unnecessary cans of worms! Better to leave it out entirely than to gesture at it vaguely but not take the time to cover it thoroughly. And you simply can’t include EVERYTHING.
It shouldn’t be a log of everything you have read or, worse!, a flex to prove how widely read you are. It’s great to think broadly about connections to your research, but focused writing will be more clear and compelling.
I’ve hit middle age and so far the biggest surprise is the discovery is that middle-aged women wear scarves because their necks are actually cold all the time. It has nothing to do with fashion. I’ll report back as I learn more.

I declare it is a crying shame that @TheTweetOfGod didn’t commit fully and become TheTootOfGod.
Having twin boy toddlers has done nothing to elevate my sense of humour.
If you’re interested in #microplastics in the #GreatLakes, do we have an #iaglr23 session for you! This session is the launch of a new #IJC project. We hope to capitalize on all the #plasticpollution #research happening in the basin to develop a #riskassessment and #monitoring framework. We’re soliciting abstracts now until *January 27*!
Don’t worry, I’ll remind you in January 😁

Attention #wetland #scientists! @KirkwoodLab and I are excited to be hosting a session at #iaglr23 in #toronto (May 8-12) on Mighty #Wetlands as #Keystone #Ecosystems. Abstract submissions for posters and oral presentations are now open
https://iaglr.org/iaglr2023/program/abstracts/
Don’t worry, we’ll remind you in the New Year. You have until *January 27* to apply.
