A key thing I've learned about Mastodon: When you find people you know and want to keep up with, don't just follow them — add them to a list!
Merely following is not enough, b/c their posts may not show up in your feed at a time you're logged on. Unlike FB or Twitter, Mastodon has no algorithm to resurface your friends' posts from hours or days ago.
So create a list called "Friends" and check it when you're on. This will ensure that you see what they posted while you were away.
@StevenBeschloss it has worked for them with Hillary's emails so this tactic is sadly effective.

@jayrosen_nyu good for CBS News but I wish they (and other news orgs) set up mastodon accounts. hardly any have done that so far. particularly important since they stopped posting on twitter.

@bloc I agree. Moderation is something every platform has to tackle particularly if it gets big enough. I was not implying that mastodon is somehow more prone to abusive behavior than other platforms. Quite the opposite has been the case so far. But that's in part because up till now it flew under the radar of a lot of bad actors because it was small.
This is changing already with the large influx of new users and I am not convinced that mastodon as it is currently set up will be able to deal with it effectively.

I don't know much about mastodon yet. So I don't know what is technically feasible.
Automatically allowing any new instance to begin unblocked seems like a problem, because the nanoinstances devoted to harassment can set up and then once blocked respawn with new names at will.
I could post some ill-informed suggestions of how to solve that, but I'll leave it to people who actually know things. What can we do?

Just one of the death threats I received on Mastodon this morning. Some were even more direct ("I'm coming to kill you"). Most used the N-word, which (especially given that I'm a white man) indicates the ideology of the senders.
People in marginalized communities have suffered this far worse than I have. Many left, which is a tremendous loss.
I'm sad because I want Mastodon to succeed. We have to find a way to fix this immediately.
