I read somewhere just now that it's useful to post additional information about oneself. So, I'm:

the daughter of one of the early nuclear engineers. He specialized in materials research for shielding suitability;
70 years old;
retired from a healthcare system after 40 years of employment with them, the last 20 years were in IT;
The proud mother of a mathematics in a Denver university who is also invilved with the LGBTQ community;
fond of #sci fi;
also watch extended versions of #lotr every year;
former mother of a bushbaby, who passed in 1971;
definitely left of center;
a voter;
getting solar panels in February;
a fugitive from Texas currently in Albuquerque, NM;
fond of all animals, used to be the neighborhood snake wrangler;
the daughter of a natural history devotee;
a voracious reader;
the wife of a fine arts scholar, who has read me to sleep every night for 24 years - all of the major classics and many of the minor ones (I got the liberal arts education that I had missed as a science student);
a terrible housekeeper, with an even worse house husband;
glad to be alive even though that might change any day with the current political disaster.

I'm a Prof of Operational Research at UCL & member of Independent SAGE.
As such, I've been tweeting about Covid for 2.5 yrs now so expect more of that here!
Plus occasional forays into politics, women in science, general science & stuff about London.

@freemo I wouldn't support the abolition of rights, but I would prefer to live in that situation over one where we still have rights but live under a dictator. Mainly because I believe that a free and equal democracy provides the best chance for the restoration of rights when they are taken away.

In other words, I believe a true democracy lacking rights has a tendency to mend its attitude towards rights to appease voters.
Whereas in the flip side, an authoritarian regime with rights, those rights are likely on their way out.

So, that's why I see democracy as a foundation for equal rights: We the people demand them.

The #UK's a strange parody of #democracy that the only reason #RishiSunak is #PrimeMinister at all is that #DominicCummings didn’t like (dismissed) one of #SavidJavid's #PoliticalAdvisers during #BorisJohnson's joke reign as #PM. Not even an inkling of an election anywhere. It reads like something out of badly written soap opera.

Three days before Christmas a few years ago.

A ten minute walk from my home, there were no cars on the roads, like mine they were probably all stuck in the snow!

Just one of those perfect, pastel, frosty winter days. Silence and a sense of time frozen like the landscape.

The balance between the trees and the sheep in the composition was magical serendipity.
