@pcrock Yes, that is correct. You are technically allowed to make changes to code but without connectivity to Wire's servers, it would cease to be a Wire app. I don't really understand the motivation behind such a clause because:

1. I change the code, but no changes to the protocol that Wire uses for server interaction so, Wire servers can still understand the protocol.
2. I change the code, changing the communication protocol too

I can understand Wire blocking the usecase for (2), but doing it for (1) too would be overly broad IMHO.

*shrug* It's Wire's code, Wire's rules.

@pcrock Here's the direct link to their README: github.com/wireapp/wire/blob/m

```
Additionally, if you choose to build an Open Source App, certain restrictions apply, as follows:
a. You agree not to change the way the Open Source App connects and interacts with our servers; b. You agree not to weaken any of the security features of the Open Source App; c. You agree not to use our servers to store data for purposes other than the intended and original functionality of the Open Source App; d. You acknowledge that you are solely responsible for any and all updates to your Open Source App.
For clarity, if you compile the open source software that we make available from time to time to develop your own mobile, desktop or web application, and do not cause that application to connect to our servers for any purposes, then that application will not be deemed an Open Source App and the foregoing will not apply to that application.
```

@pcrock Yes, it's good. Did you also notice a small by-word in their terms? They ask that you do not modify the source if you plan to self-host? I'm hoping it's because they haven't nailed down their federation story yet

I wonder if the massive lockdown over Coronavirus will force employers to rethink their workforce policies? Perhaps allow for more flexibility in WFH? or go fully remote? Or they might even see that fully remote is the way to go and it's not so bad as they thought after all? πŸ€”

@illandan No data loss at all. We have very high data retention rates. One reason why our search is one of the most comprehensive in the fediverse.

@freemo Great! I wouldn't terribly mind any data loss considering the effort it takes to keep these sites up. Thanks for all the hard work!

Oh, my timeline is filled in now. Wonder what it was, some downtime?

Hmm, I log in here to an... empty home feed? What's happening?
πŸ˜…

@stephaniewalter@mastodon.design Heh, is that because your students turn in odd/random/weird/strange stuff in their assignments? πŸ˜†

@freemo Oh that's odd. I searched for and all I got was "0 people talking" with empty timelines. I did search for other variants like , and so on. Where can I see some live activity stream?

I'm not talking about the 'federated timeline' view with some filters on. I wanted to try something through the mastodon API for a live feed on a single hashtag.

Would you know of anything like that?

Hey Fediverse, here's a question for you: If I search for a hashtag, are the results presented from all federated instances or just the home instance?

@dch I haven't met Joe, but it was a pleasure to read his book "Programming Erlang". I think his enthusiasm rubbed off on many people in the Erlang community. It was quite evident in my conversations with Robert Virdig and his talks when he was in India. Joe was a great ambassador or even better, for Erlang, the same way that SPJ, Guido, Larry are for Haskell, Python and Perl, respectively. I wish I had met him :-(

May he remain happy, wherever he is.

@vee Maybe, it's just revolting against all that abuse/slavery! Come on, confess already - are you paying your TV too much of your time? πŸ˜†

@Expat1975 Am I right in reading this as a long lament for Summer? πŸ˜†

This reads well, you should start cursing the sun for not pulling its weight enough. People up north, in the Scandinavian countries will curse the Sun a lot more (Sun shows up, but no warmth, light falling in at an angle).

I find it perplexing that the main criticism of WhatsApp is that it's owned by Facebook.

@pcrock Yeah, I find that annoying too. It's just an app that *enables* people to communicate with each other. Why should it be a cause for exclusion, just because it's owned by Facebook?

So, what I have resorted to do is, I *still* have WhatsApp, with the minimum set of permissions I can grant:
* No Camera
* No GPS
* No Storage
* No Contacts

This means I cannot initiate conversations with people I want to talk to, but I can only continue from previous conversations (or they have to initiate them first). I'm perfectly fine with that - as in, I'm not itching to talk to them *only* over WhatsApp when I can do with alternative medium of communication just fine.

@Surasanji I just looked over the changelogs: github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/ and I'm pretty sure only developers can comprehend stuff from this ChangeLog. Has anyone managed to break this down for end-users and admins? πŸ˜†

@pcrock Oh, and if you have a good circle of friends to try it out, good luck! There's also wireapp that you can self-host

@pcrock With E2E, I find the verification process to be a hassle and it sometimes gets it wrong - as in, same machine, *possibly* same session (not logged off, just closed browser and opened it again), still it asked me to reverify the keys. Not sure if this changed since I last checked, reverification meant that you had to do that for *all* keys assigned to your user ID. Or I might not be remembering them correctly - but I do remember the *hassle* part. πŸ˜†
