@parismarx Your net worth can change. You can be rich, you can be poor, but boy, you can't change races.

@jeffjarvis @marcelias One TV newsman said on his current affairs show that Mastodon was 'too hard'.

I sent him a little tweet to help.

I've seen a lot of white folks suggest new Black users change instances if they have a bad experience on their first Mastodon server.

Why should that be the default expectation? I understand that bad actors will always be there to create accounts and instances to harass folks.

It is incumbent on us, as anti-racist white folks, to find ways to prevent these bad actors from making our spaces unwelcoming to new Black users. It's a failure of imagination otherwise.

@jayrosen_nyu It's covering an election like it's a football pre-game show.

@obi I like this video about sympathy vs empathy. It's very interesting AND only three minutes.

@obi I think I have an answer, but it's very incomplete. Human systems fail due to lack of empathy.

Hubris (it's always been that way) and selfishness (what's the most that I can get out of this) are two powerful symptoms of a failing human system.

One other is lack of accountability, like robbing graves in ancient Egypt.

Another is too much accountability, that would be authoritarianism, like Iran.

I was thinking less about the Internet and more about the fall of Rome or Egypt. It still applies though. Remember MySpace? Total hubris.

Journalists: There has to be a concept of overreporting. Like, we've gone over this and there's no actual new angle. We can move onto all of these other stories.

There also should be a sense that your news org specializes in certain things. You focus on the impact of crime, or positive stories, or hopeful stories.

The product itself has to have a point of view, otherwise, the oligarchy controls it but does no media buys.

Then, you're stuck in this control - agitate - engage loop.

The oligarchy spews. It agitates people. Some like it, some hate it, they post and watch. This engagement leads to bigger CPMs, so as a news org, you wait for the oligarchy to spew again instead of doing great stuff.

The only real way to inoculate your news org is to have sticky stories that people are interested in. This is tough! Gotta get into niches.

As the saying goes "the riches are in niches". That's where there you separate yourself in content and even in ad $$$.

Otherwise, you're getting bullied by whoever has the most attention and biggest check...and that might be the same person at this point. Not good!

@obi I had to think about that question. It's not one that I would be an expert in, I'm sure there are better people to ask!

@obi Is it? You could say the same thing about lots of things. Flashmobs for example.

"Flashmobs first gained popularity with their synchronized dancing, mega-pillow fights, and the like. It now appears that the thugs have interjected their own version of flash mobs: large roving bands of predators hunting their next prey."

"If you’ve ever wondered how social media is changing our society, we’re finally seeing a debate that’s not just a bunch of hot takes. Professors from the world’s leading universities are now weighing in, taking into account a vast body of studies to draw conclusions about the actual impact of Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc. on the way we live."

@freemo @louiscouture @Gargron @khird @trinsec

You are providing a valuable service, at the same time the new people on this site don't know any of you. So hearing ANYTHING about Kiwi Farms is unexpected and unwanted.

@louiscouture @freemo @Gargron @khird @trinsec

You could use CloudFlare instead of Kiwi Farms. That's all they do. You'd have to explain why'd you would even use Kiwi Farms instead of anything else.

Are you paying for this? Sure. So you can choose who you do business with. If you're choosing to do business with people who provide "harassment campaigns" that "are known to have contributed to the suicides of three individuals", that's just shows your values.
