@david_colquhoun Indeed. Twitter invested heavily in enabling push-based promotion, both algorithmic and paid-for, so became well-suited to news-type content.
I don’t think that Mastodon serves that kind of content very well, being more akin to a traditional personal pull-based microblogging platform which is more ephemeral than the primarily promotional platform that Twitter later became.

@david_colquhoun That’s a limitation by design. Mastodon’s #search is limited to #hashtags, usernames, user URLs and post (toot) URLs. This is why use of hashtags is strongly encouraged.
It’s more about finding connections than about finding content. For searching general information or #news, one would be better off with one of the larger search engines.

Moderation complication, nazis
I hesitate to boost this, because people only reading the headline might misread it as "someone is accusing Eugen of *being* a Nazi, which is either true or a melodramatic Godwinization" or "Mastodon is full of Nazis".
TLDR:
1. Our instance, qoto.org, came under attack by an actual, swastika-waving Nazi. Mastodon is by no means full of such bad actors, but they do exist. Freemo provides evidence and history of the attack.
2. This bad actor created enough disinformation noise that Eugen chose to delist qoto from joinmastodon to protect the reputation of Mastodon. This was a win for the baddies.
3. Debates over proper moderation and federation policies are complicated and can grow heated.

@arclight It generally used in place of “outside of <bounds condition>” or “excepting from <…>”, but can also mean simply the opposite of “within” (cf “without”).
What you’re looking for is “get tae…”. 😉
