@Edgecontrol Y para mi?
@bookgaga @ralf That is the only use there is: favourites have no utility for the social itself.
The person you favourites gets a notification about it.
It's pretty much like saying: I like what you said but I have nothing to add and still wanted you to know about it.
If you really like a post you should boost it to let others know about it.
Liking a post is mainly for when someone has been kind to you but what he wrote isn't so important that you want to share it with other people.
In general, you shouldn't like posts too much but rather reply to them.
@josemanuel @davoloid I tried doing that; it works for a few days maybe but it's not a sustainable endeavour.
A bunch of new accounts are created every day.
@aral I don't feel the fediverse is structured for private communication and I don't think it should.
If you wish to discuss something privately don't do it on a social network, as simple as that.
@josemanuel @davoloid This solves only part of the problem, the part which is: the timeline moves so quick I cannot read.
It's a good setting to enable by all means; but it does not address the huge amount of things that come out there.
I believe there is no way to actually follow the federated timeline of a large instance, that would mean spending a very large amount of time each day reading a lot of useless stuff.
On the other hand it is nice every now and then to take a look and pick some interesting people to explore further.
@DavidBrueckner No, choosing a server is quite important to start.
Not in the way it's advertised though; you should not spend several days just finding the perfect instance, that is useless since you're due to change instance quickly.
There is quite a big difference between Mastodon and Twitter which is the local timeline and the system through which toots propagate in the fediverse.
I am going to write a guide on how to socialize on Mastodon and choosing an appropriate starting instance, without wasting too much time, is quite important.
I believe that a good place to start shouldn't have a very high insularity in order to allow you to discover other instances, on the other hand it shouldn't be a place which is hyperconnected (such as qoto) because that will make you feel that the local timeline and in general the local community is useless; which it isn't in a lot of smaller instances.
@vanhilla_chrisis From the MOPAC manual: you should have a folder structure in which you have a directory for results and one for calculations.
Each calculation is assigned a separate subdirectory in the calculations folder.
If a calculation doesn't work, you take note of why it didn't work; delete the directory and create a new one with the appropriate corrections.
If a calculation is successful you copy all relevant files in the results folder and delete everything else.
In this way you don't have these kinds of problems and you don't have a bunch of useless stuff on your filesystem.
@davoloid I'll be frank, I also feel it is quite useless.
Though you have to consider that we are on qoto, which is a large instance which does not block a lot of content.
I know some people use it a lot and this survey is done exactly to find good uses for it.
Surely in small and insular instances the federated timeline is a nice feature.
How often do you use the federated timeline?
Please, add a comment explaining why you do or do not use it; what's cool about it and what are the problems.

@DavidBrueckner In this case then just #Science should work.
@DavidBrueckner Hello, I'm unfamiliar with the hashtag since I have not been an assiduous user of Twitter.
What was its purpose on twitter?
Is it to let others know about a published paper, to discuss a paper, to discuss problems in science, to tell cool things that happen?
@gubi Ci vorrebbe un resoconto che listi tutte le occasioni in cui ha portato sfiga.
Se davvero continua così magari tenerlo in parlamento diventa una buona opzione.

@holon
Abbiamo trovato un candidato migliore per la posizione di admin di mastodon.uno
Sarebbe il primo prete admin di una istanza Italiana!
Se va bene magari è pure donna...
@Ilportapizzadicathy
Italian, MSc in chemistry specialized in cheminformatics and QSAR.
I'm interested in cooking and building stuff.
I love traveling, I lived in India, China, Slovenia, Poland and Spain.
Currently working in Spain in the field of genomics; and doing a PhD in Drug Development using Quantum Mechanics and Artificial Intelligence.
Don't take what I say as an insult, I have no bad intentions and I'm open to talk about it.
Don't star my toots, I find that often useless: if you liked it send a reply.
Consider boosting the toots, it's the only real way in which stuff is propagated through mastodon.
