Last night the 11yo broke down the Google Slides middle school Chatroom for me:

1. At first they used a Google doc but the infinite scroll was too chaotic
2. In the slide deck each new slide is one “post”—some all text, some images, some both—
3. They use slides’ comments feature to “reply” to each other’s “posts”
4. This allows participants to easily flip between posts using the slide thumbnail navigation, so they can find the conversations they care about easily
5. He owns the file & if anyone spams it, deletes other people’s posts, or gets nasty, he can revert the file to its previous save state & remove the spammer’s access
6. He did share the file with me on purpose, I think because he was proud & wanted me to see what he’d made

Essentially they’ve created a chatroom with moderation in Google Slides, so they can get around the school’s ban on platforms like Discord. It’s kind of brilliant

This random comment has given me my new favourite argument for removing fares from public transit.

Once upon a time, logging into a website required:

- fill in 2 fields, click a button

#2FA has turned this into:

- fill in 2 fields, click a button, look at your phone, copy and paste a code, click a button.

Bad #ux design has turned this into:

- click a link to show a menu, click another link, wait, fill in a field, click a button, wait, fill in another field, click another button, do the 2FA dance if needed ...

By 2025 you're going to need to submit a 6-page essay just to log in.

from the linguistic silliness tgat brought us trash panda, and danger noodle:

so every time russian trolls hit an ukrainian open-registration mastodon instance, the fediblock gets lit.

first come the outraged that demand the instance gets immediately defederated or else, because they host nazis.

second come those with good advice. “i encourage you to do x, y and z, all of which will limit the accessibility if the service to your fellow people, but will make everything so much more convenient to us

third come those who offer to help: moderate the instances in the hours when the shelling and bombardments make it impossible for the admins to log in, or screen the join requests.

lol, the last para was just a joke. no-one on the fediblock cares, and after all, no-one speaks ukrainian or whatever is the language there.

fediblock: keeping the fediverse clean for those who speak majority languages.

@dandelion we have it in mycology too. LBM is little brown mushroom, notoriously hard to ID so just LBM.
