My new hobby is gonna be adding the missing last panel to the motivational infographics posted on LinkedIn

Should we be putting important Public Health information re Covid behind a CW? Are we pandering to the Covid denial lobby? Just wondering.

Mixing Python code with politics, vulgarity

I'm writing code to grab and decode data from the devices I monitor to solve problems with our small operation. I decided to use the sequence '***** ***' as a section separator within text files containing the captured data. You can read more about this sequence here notesfrompoland.com/2020/10/30 but it basically means "fuck the ruling_party". It also means "fuck the makers of the equipment we use", as they did not provide an easy way to get this data.

The front desk just posted a message to the library chat that a visitor had a question about our classification system and could somebody come help. I have been training my whole life for this moment.

remember, the Salvation Army is no friend of the LGBTQ community and giving them money helps them pass legislation which stamps out people like me

What I'm saying is that there's only one creative team that has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to produce adaptations of literary classics. And that's why The Muppets should have been allowed to make the Dune movie.

Inspected the last stretch of power lines to our place today. are keeping reasonable distance, though this might change when snow starts falling and cracked branches hit the wires. The generator tank is full, so we're ready. Life in the of .

After weeks of cloudy skies we finally had some sunshine. The low quality sunshine you would expect in the of at this time of the year, but nevertheless real sunshine, not the canned thing we've depended on. , our pack of , appeared to be happy

Here's a scatterplot of health spending per capita (x axis) and life expectancy (y axis) in OECD countries. The lines represent averages.

One country sits alone in the bottom right quadrant due to its much higher health spending and below-average life expectancy.

It's #winter in the northern hemisphere. This means (1) I have to remember how to spell "hemisphere," and (2) the leaves are gone from a lot of the trees.

But some dead leaves remain, and they might remain in these strange little clumps. What are they? Find out in my new #newsletter

Mauna Loa eruption

Why is the eruption of Mauna Loa a big deal for residents of Hawaii? The volcano covers half of the island, including the largest city, Hilo. It is an always looming threat, though one mostly quiet since 1984.

Beyond the risk to communities, the famous atmospheric observatory capturing global CO2 rise is on the volcano's flanks. It has a lava break, but it bears watching.

Attached is a USGS map showing the lava shed. But note, right now the eruption isn't going anywhere.

So, the European Union has set up its own Mastodon instance, EU Voice, as an official channel/platform for all its many institutions - what a great initiative social.network.europa.eu/about

I’ve never thought there was a simple reason that China banned films involving #TimeTravel. But this must be part of the reason.

Twitter was never a healthy "public square" for most of us. Let's not rewrite history while eulogizing the hellsite.
Twitter was a frightening battleground where we managed barely to claw out an uneasy existence amidst the worst violent neo-Nazi extremists who constantly published our home addresses, threatened our kids' lives, and sent hordes of racist trolls into our mentions.
The same principles that allowed us to survive uneasily on Twitter will be required here in the #fediverse. Community defense, thoughtful pressure on moderation policies, and eternal vigilance.
There are no safe spaces but those we make safe through constant effort. We keep us safe.

When we talk about , it’s important to understand that is the product of the AND the number of people who from the function. So, if a wetland slows down the flow of runoff, that’s a function, but if it does that upstream of your house during a major storm, THAT’S when it has value. Sure being near so many ppl causes stress and effects their integrity, but it also means they benefit A LOT of people. More people visit them, learn from them too!
