I’m estimating visibility on the hill to be about 20-30 metres today, which makes for an interesting ‘Spot the dog’ challenge.

Clue: She’s within visibility range in all but #4 where she’s definitely testing the boundaries.

My almost 13 year old daughter had a good idea. We’ve been talking about doing a podcast together - mostly for us to have.

Her idea was reviewing books that are being taken out of school libraries - discussing the content, reviewing the actual literature but also the reasons it was banned and our thoughts there as well.

This is something I think that we will do, soon.

TIL that one of Germany’s biggest supermarket chains will stop producing printed marketing flyers this year. Their main argument is the climate and the numbers are insane:

Yearly savings:

- 390.000 m3 of wood
- 70.000 tons of CO2
- 380.000.000 kWh of energy

It’s the CO2 equivalent of roughly 60.000 ICE cars and the energy could power 100.000 4-person households for a year 🤯

There was a trial of #fourdayweek #working in 2022; the results in:

70 firms expressed interest but 9 didn't start for various practical reasons.

of 61 firms who completed the trial in UK:

18 will maintain the 4 day working week permanently;

38 are continuing with the trial;

Participating firms saw revenue rise & staff turnover decline.

#workers found level(s) of #wellbeing increased.

We now have good data on #productivity & better life/work balance; time for others to follow?

Just a reminder that using "the children" and their need for "protection" has been the basis of every horrific moral panic targeting a marginalized group.

I think I worked out a process to turn cattails (typha) into a viable insulation, that won't burn my place down

- Open the heads inside a garbage bag (to contain the mess)

- Add some water to the bag to soak them (initially, the fluff is somewhat water repellent)

- Put into a pot, filled with water

- Heat while slowly adding borax (will also get rid of any insect eggs/larvae)

- Evaporate and spread into layers while moist

You'll hopefully get something similar to rockwool insulation

One aspect that comes to mind is a term I've heard from multiple people that they call the "collector's fallacy" which is the idea that writing notes and collecting knowledge isn't useful on its own it must be geared towards producing a work of some kind, like an essay or research paper. And that's kinda horseshit right? Like learning things is good per se, it doesn't need to be justified.

My mind has kinda come back to the whole Personal Knowledge Management fad. It's something I'm interested in and I really want to use things like Obsidian but there's this weird self-helpy atmosphere around it that puts me off.

My first seedlings of 2023 are just popping this morning. Whether you have a yard or a windowsill, I can't recommend enough putting seeds in soil, adding water, and waiting. I don't have a lot of answers to any of the big questions and crises of the world, but this is the most simple, hopeful thing I know how to do. It helps.
