Watched the BBC Horizon "Are Video Games Really That Bad?" episode last night (imdb.com/title/tt5499642/).

I've played my share of violent video games, so I had a feeling the link between violent video game playing and actual violence was bunk.

The so-called "addictive" nature of video games is no joke. It only took a few very negative experiences of losing myself in a video game for hours-on-end when I was younger to make myself acutely aware of time spent playing.

On the other hand, I think there's a lot to be gained from playing video games. I think it makes you smarter in numerous ways.

I have found balance in playing multiplayer Terraria for 1 hour, twice a week with my kids.

I like to switch it up with the game every so often, and Terraria is getting a little stale. If anybody has any recommendations, I'm all ears.

Other multiplayer games we've played and enjoyed: Minetest, 1st person shooters, Factorio, Open Red Alert.

@barefootstache Yes, unburned free sugars in your bloodstream definitely get stored as fat.

I'd recommend looking up the minimum amount of protein you need to eat based on your weight, activity level, etc, and make sure you hit that target every day. Then, mess around with carbs and fat and see how you feel. I have two copies of the hunter-gatherer gene variant (CLTCL1), so I do best on a low carb/no carb (keto) diet.

@atheprogrammer I was just thinking that my UU church could use a Mastodon instance. It would be great for a small community like that. Although the older folks have the hardest time with passwords.

@worldsendless No. I used to though. I recently migrated off of my long-time Gmail account for a few reasons. Didn't enjoy the UI, too many automated messages (felt unorganized), and didn't like the idea of Google having my personal data. So I created a Protonmail account for all my automated messages (website signups, notifications, etc) and an account with my ISP for all of my personal correspondence (using Thunderbird as a POP3 client). Much better now!

The only problem is that people have forgotten how to write long-form correspondence. Emails usually consist of only a few words.

@2ck Yes, homeschooling. I hear you. Teaching some subjects are like pulling teeth 😬. That's always a sign that it isn't time yet.

They're really into this class, but I don't think they're going to retain the knowledge because they don't use it outside of the class. Hopefully exposing them to the material will be enough to give them the option to dive back in at some point if they want/need to.

I've been going through [The Linux command line](bookwyrm.social/book/28551) with the kids for our computer class. I'm struggling to find some real-world projects for them to apply their knowledge. I think I need to stop touching their computers. Things will break eventually, and they'll have to fix it.

My hope is that they don't just stop using it when it breaks. You can lead a horse to water...
