@dff Big amen on that. Funny I hadn't thought about it; I just assumed data was private, code was public (like Facebook Llama), but being transparent about the training data would be marvelous too. Now we need a legal hero, we need you! @eff

@worldsendless the genie is out of the bottle. I'm not advocating for unleashed AI but for applying the principles of open source to AI: access to training data, algorithms and weightings including the right to study, alter and reshare. Also, it would be nice if a smart person would come up with some legal framework like GPL or Creative Commons for AI.

I just used for the first time, both thanks to and also because of the ongoing issues with and privacy (which should be a surprise to no one, except my employers...). Jitsi worked like a dream: no lag, sharp video, and totally functional screen sharing

On that story about scientists leaving X and coming here. Please, please lean into the feature of hashtag following and tag your stuff. A lot of us would love to find you and hashtag discovery is the easiest way here.

@dff I'm so confused... isn't AI forcing software to go "closed" because it is exploitative and gluttonous?

When it was first born, the enemy of was incontestibly (). That enemy has morphed, though, and now seems to be large-scale appropriation, especially (but not exclusively) in the name of . And I'm really not sure what can be done about this exploitation. Further discussion that actually does not mention AI: writing.kemitchell.com/2021/01

@serioga @nikitonsky we gave up on Immutant years ago because of broken dependencies and a codebase so big and complicated that I couldn't fix it myself.

@vedang But I am confused -- is it mastodon or not? In what senses is it or isn't it?

I find it a little bit ironic that #RedPlanetLabs built a Twitter-scale #Mastodon Clone as a demonstration of their new platform #Rama, but I cannot discover any chatter about Rama via Mastodon Search. :) #Clojure

I've recently been working on updating Ring to remove the servlet dependency for multipart middleware (github.com/ring-clojure/ring/t), and to update Ring's Jetty adapter to 11.0 (github.com/ring-clojure/ring/t) #clojure

I spent an hour with the toddler and infant watching youtube.com/@msrachel. The 6-month old liked this, too. Definitely made me think of @DrFreemo

@marcolas For URL shortening I've used yourls.org/ for years. They are open source and, being PHP, work fine on my shared hosting.

Upgrading the PHP version on my sites broke my URL shortener. Rather than reverting, I finally did what it has been bugging me about for years and upgraded the system. Now I am back to being able to take a url string in and, with one keystroke, convert it into a off one of my domains, which I can then check stats to see how much my link was visited. Of course, as soon as I finished the upgrade it was telling me, "There's a newer version available."

I used to think it silly how many were on . Then I realized it's not just for trigger warnings and objectionable content, but to respect the structural integrity of people's streams. There is a lot to say in favor of being able to move down your feed without images blatantly wrestling for your attention all the time. Probably it shouldn't be misnamed "private" but maybe just "hidden"

Stupid errors. Forgot I needed to insert single quotes in my transpiling. But THEN I found out that you can't have - dashes anywhere in variable names in js. My heart is really ing in sadness.

@souldessin it's even relying on either etherium or the outrageously named web3.js . I've switched to a more stable login service that isn't blatantly crazy about the blockchain. I'm working with auth0/okta.

apparently magic.link now requires blockchain for its solution. Yech. I didn't sign up for this.
