What I actually want from a brand on social media: that if my laptop gets damaged the shipment, the manufacturer will make it right.

I think we need to be careful not to jump to conclusions, we have some 'brands' on here if we say count @nextcloud as a brand,but they are open source and not trying to target people with adverts to directly sell (we can download and use freely).

I assume we want to encourage people who are artists or sold traders, that is still a contentious issue and people are probably, quite rightly, concerned. So we need the right balance.

We have some really talented people here, esp in the science community, links to papers, journal articles are really good, and I follow those who post them. However I can also boost what I find interesting, but what my followers may find interesting, esp if I am aware people are looking for jobs or opportunities. If I can't help boosting that post means others see it.

Algotithms, would get totally messed up with that as I would then get bombarded with stuff I am not actually interested in as those algotithms don't take in to account the above thinking.

We have lots of small and medium size businesses who are struggling against the huge entity called amazon and others, so they may not be 'brands' as such but each business is a brand if they have their own made products.

I would like to think they are welcome here to promote and sell products or at least link to their websites so people can buy.

I am more concerned about the huge companies who have the ability to pay an army of people just to boost or artifically inflate how things are seen on here. However without trending you could boost this post a million times, there is no trending anyway.

Brands are already on Mastodon.

Specifically, brands that are targeting the "tech community".

They're in listening mode right now to "avoid any bad players or chances of upsetting a Mastodon community".

Or in the case of Elon Musk stupidity in a group of one.

Actually from a fedi viewpoint he is a 'useful idiot'

I have seen people outside in the dark, wearing dark clothing top and bottoms, the issue is you just can't see them as a pedestrian, so drivers have the same problem, regardless of if they are driving a mini or a massive Heavy goods vehicle.

I have a Hi-viz vest which I use for American Football chain crew, (even in bright daylight) so wear that when going to / from work in the dark.

I think it means you think you are worried about being ill all the time, or think you are really ill even if it is a minor ailment.

Should we refer to Martin Luther King as Martin Luther King or Martin Luther King Junior ?

@BE @augieray

I agree there, in the Uk a covid death was recorded as such even they died within 30 days of a positive test or something. So you may have say a lung condition already say COPD, get covid, it could be that the actual cause was COPD complications, as you were given a postive covid test you died from covid.

So figures are not very accurate on this basis, we just don't know the true figures.

@augieray

I knew quite a few people in hospitals at the beginning of the pandemic and every single one of them said that they'd never seen a wave of flu anything like what they were seeing, despite the supposedly high number of flu deaths that the CDC reports.

It's worth mentioning that flu deaths are only estimated, and are, in fact, overestimated every year.

Not only that, but the CDC adds in deaths *after* the acute phase of the flu, which of course is not the same as COVID deaths.

cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/faq.h

What it all adds up to is that COVID deaths are seriously undercounted(over 700 excess deaths per day in the US but only around half of those counted as COVID) and flu deaths are likely overcounted every year.

NASA’s Retired Compton Mission Reveals Superheavy Neutron Stars

nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/

"Astronomers studying archival observations of powerful explosions called short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have detected light patterns indicating the brief existence of a superheavy neutron star shortly before it collapsed into a black hole. This fleeting, massive object likely formed from the collision of two neutron stars."

Lab-grown alternatives aim to cut palm oil dependence

Shara Ticku: "In 2013 I flew to Singapore, and when I landed I had to wear a mask,". "The air was toxic because they were burning the rainforest in Indonesia."

Indonesian farmers, who were clearing land for palm oil and other crops, were blamed for the fires and the smoke that drifted across the sea to Singapore.

Because big business is about making profit at any cost. It seems the oil industry knew about cliamate change in the 70s did nothing and we are now paying the price.

@astroilin On Earth an Ozone layer (O_3) is important, if I understand it correctly Ozone is formed due to the interaction between Oxygen (O_2) and high energy particles in the upper atmosphere.

I have just put the formulae in for completeness.

Question time!

Julian Alvarado-Gómez asks:

Many future extremely large telescopes won't have polarization measurement capabilities, how does that limit the prospect of applying your technique?

Svetlana answers:

Spectral features and total flux can provide a lot of information already. She emphasizes that contrast to the stellar signal is an important observational factor.

@rferl

I stand corrected on moving military kit around, but doesn't salt have medicinal value for treating injuries.

However from the video it seems that russia has ended the infrastructure running these mines, like they did with the nuclear power station, rendering what could be useful into something far less useful as no one is around to run it.

Cutting off power to nuclear power stations cooling is not a good idea, cutting power to salt mine ventilation is equally a bad idea you need people to actually run and maintain all this.

Why is Russia so keen to seize Soledar? Could the famous salt mines and tunnels have military value?

@currenttimetv@twitter.com asked a geologist:

@rferl

Salt is a valuable commodity, if there are tunnels then these are probably used to extract the salt, but I think for salt are huge and therefore could have military use.
