@cubicgarden how so? I've heard of this anecdotally but haven't seen data to support it. Like, in most developed nations even the poorest have some form of ID. Even in my shit country by age of 9 almost everybody has a national ID already... So I'm sure UK can also pull it off.
@DrusaShikha where to?
@jmw150 ahh gotcha, thanks for explaining.
@jmw150 can you explain what that is as if I'm 12.

Amazon Ring is the largest civilian surveillance network the US has ever seen: one in 10 US police departments can now access videos from millions of Ring cameras without a warrant: https://u.fsf.org/3cq
@ktemkin nope. Don't remember any of it.
Why is leaving the Google and Apple mobile ecosystem a thing?
Because, even if you opt out of whatever the OS offers, you are still leaking data to them at an unacceptable rate.
Apple only cares about privacy when it is profitable.
Just remember buying their products supports giving personal data to authoritarians with a penchant for genocide.

@vertigo I remember being on the same boat when I first got into C/C++ programming with embedded devices that use CMake build system. Not fun at all. In some cases a simple blinky would have a crazy complicated CMake file. This is literally the main reason I started looking into alternatives such as cargo with Rust.

And regarding getting your deposit back in the UK:
Move into a place with some defect (broken tile in kitchen) -> moving out get charged £700 as whole kitchen floor needs to be redone and get blamed for broken tile ->Go back to the moving inventory with pictures to show the pictures of when I moved in -> agency refuses to give deposit back -> file complaint with deposit agency -> get back £100 out of my £700 deposit for "excessive damage" to some tile that was already broken when I moved in........
Finally find a place I can afford to pay for a year then you get into this shit:
Me: okay, so we'll need you to send us the key by mail.
Agency: we can't do that since we need to do a right to rent check (in person) before we give you the keys.
Me: sends links from government website showing that you *can* do right to rent checks online, for free using the own government website.
Agency: we'll still need you to come in person to collect the keys.
I fucking hate #English landlords/letting agencies. I haven't had a single positive/neutral experience in this fucking country when renting a place.
The renting system is already broken in the #UK in which you are almost guaranteed to lose part of your deposit but as an #immigrant it's about 10x worse. You have two options, either pay 6-12 months upfront or have a **UK-based** guarantor that will pay in case you don't. So as immigrants we are basically forced to pay a whole year in advance... so f-ing #unfair.
As a researcher, what are some things that you find annoying when searching the scientific literature? What could be improved?
@louiscouture really? No advantage at all?
At this point I can't tell if people are just being sarcastic or not. Like, I can understand being frustrated that trans kids aren't being allowed to participate in highschool sports (at a non-professional level) in which, as you said, it should be about having fun. But if you're participating in it at pro-level and making lots of $$$ then I think it's more than appropriate to figure out if a person has an unfair advantage, and I think in the case of , let's say a biological male who is a woman participating with mostly biological females then that would be an advantage and thus unfair for the other biological females in that sport.
If these distinctions didn't make any difference we would not have segregated sports into male/female dominated categories and they would perform similarly at a professional level. I. E we'd have females that can run as fast as Usain Bolt...
Btw I don't mean to come across as mean spirited transphobe... Happy to take notes and learn but I'd have to see some kind of logical explanation.
@biomedmax lol those cows giving you the "we can fuck you up" look 😂

I believe there's a chance we might unknowingly be in an interstellar war in which the first consciousness to spread itself throughout the universe will dictate how consciousness is experienced until the heat death of the universe. Thus, it's my duty as a human-derived consciousness to ensure that whatever survives this war is a consciousness compatible with our notions of justice so that future conscious descendants of our species may enjoy the same benefits (or more) than we currently have. This belief has several practical implications day-to-day for me; my utility function is to maximize the chance that human-derived consciousness survives long enough into the future (until the universe allows so).
