Baked some trout. Covered in kosher salt and sugar over night, wiped off, rinsed off, baked uncovered at 425°F for abt 15min, rotated and back in for abt 10min, on top of oven with the oven on for about five minutes.
I seasoned with black pepper, ginger, sage, olive oil, but no additional salt since it's pretty salty already

If you're in Chile or are planning to visit soon, ESO's observatories are reopening for in-person visits!

The tours are free, but you have to register in advance: eso.org/public/announcements/a

I'm biased 'cause I worked there for 7 years, but it's totally worth it!

why does have search suggestions from the web on by default?

@publius
obscure for the reasons you gave... many (most?) people haven't heard of the guy or the history you relate.

@publius that's a rather obscure comment about your guy Santos-Dumont @jalefkowit@octodon.social

@jalefkowit@octodon.social come on, a *lot* people know Buzz Aldrin's name... at least he in the United States--he's a national hero!

@abbienormal @cwebber there are some neat things that can be done that reduces the impact of the tagging stuff.

Perhaps this blog post I wrote would be interesting: blog.dhsdevelopments.com/commo

nice little turn-up from Docker's random container name generator (usually I've seen the names before):

I used to think 1% is small, but 1% occurrence in the general population means you're nearly guaranteed to see someone with the condition at least once in your lifetime unless you live in a very cloistered group. 6.2% is a huge number... I remember some expert, I think on the Serial podcast, season one, saying how rare it is that you'll talk to a sociopath, and maybe for the context that's true, but in general I think it's not true if that statistic is.

(the 0-6.2% range from the DSM is bonkers though: 'somewhere between a hefty chunk of the population and non-existent 🤪')

the author of the article has a pretty clear conflict of interest though, so take it all with a grain of salt

there's a taxonomic group for fungi and animals separate from plants -- in my freshman biology class, we just had animals, plants, and fungi all laid flat underneath eukaryotes.

Today I was invited to join the EIRSAT-1 team to their clean room to help tiny bit while they continue working towards building the final version of the satellite. We are building Ireland’s first satellite! A cubesat the size of a shoebox that will monitor the gamma-ray sky with novel technollogy developed here at UCD.
Exciting times!

Can you trap a galaxy in a crystal ball? I tried! Back in 2018 I took this image of the Milky Way through a crystal ball from ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile.

These are NGC5426 and NGC5427, collectively known as Arp271, a pair of interacting spiral galaxies located about 130 million lightyears away.

I took this image back in 2018 with VIMOS, an instrument at ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile. I was the Instrument Scientist, and that night we were decommissioning the instrument to make room for a new one, so I decided to take one last farewell image to celebrate all the cool science done with this instrument over the years.

It's weird that they say the Bryan character looks like Harper. I thought the character looked more like Richard Ayoade, but with a more prominent chin...and more buff.

So I got a lathe, and I made this! (not the wood part, but I'm working on it) It's a Paua Abalone shell inlay into a size 10 wooden ring blank. Polished up to 12000 grit, and while the images don't exactly catch the opalescence, I'm very proud of my first attempt :ablobcool:
