Results from the sample returned from asteroid #Ryugu by the #Hayabusa2 probe. As expected, they found amino acids.

"[T]he results show that the asteroid Ryugu is the most primitive, unaltered object ever studied, much the same as it was when the solar system itself was new."

@soup_reviews that's amazing. my school never did anything like that, but we also weren't in a college town. I guess there's no reason we couldn't do that sort of thing though...

BTW you may have seen this GIF labeled as "shark bites fiber optic cable" and wondered if it was correct.
Sharks have that electroreception sense that lets them sense the electric field of fish, but fiber optic cables are just light. Why would they attack fiber optics?

gonna send an experiment to the ISS. Study title: "When you're 420 km up, can you get any higher? Effects of microgravity on microdosing of THC and other cannabinoids"

@zwol no, but you can write out the characters here: jisho.org/

finding them by radicals is easier sometimes though

@mihaitodor

Thread about AI art stuff, DallE2 vs MidJourney

So I've been tinkering with Dall-E 2 for a few days now (limited, I get 50 renders a day) and it's very *very* different to MidJourney. Whereas the people behind MidJourney have the goal of making something that's a creative tool for the people using it, OpenAI is more interested in making 'ethical AI that can be used to better humanity'. Both good, both very different.

I was pretty excited about trying DallE-2 but honestly after using it a bit-

@monorail did you call the police or someone to have that car impounded? that or the owner should be made to remove the makeshift windshield and drive at low speeds

@soup_reviews never heard of tracker music before: it looks weirdly approachable. thanks for cluing me in 😄

which con did you attend? I went to HOPE and had a pretty good time attending the talks though I didn't really connect with anyone

@soup_reviews something I got from Test-Driven Development (TDD) is have something that shows you what the last problem was. It works kinda like a cliff hanger, I guess, in that it persists longer in your memory, but also it's something you can immediately start to do something about next time without having to recapture *all* of your past mental state.

I guess you work with music synths a lot? I know nothing about that, but maybe there's something like having some sample you run through your patches (right term?) that helps orient you? or maybe leave yourself detailed notes when you come to a stopping place

If I were an alien race on another planet and I saw earth before they could see us, I would start hiding my emissions (chemical, radio, whatever) ASAP. Even if they turn out to be a race we can work with, there's every advantage to learning more about them through passive sensing and no advantage to giving away our position and patterns to an unknown element.

I baked some bread in the middle of the night because it's been a challenging week and I like bread

@Yujiri aren't there safety codes that the building owner is liable for that could be violated if apartments are overpopulated?
