@dpthorngren oh, hey. Sean Carroll's there now.
probably not relevant to you, but that's my only handle on JHU
@izaya, I don't usually make unsolicited book recs, but I think you might like this one (see OP)
fair warning though, the ending kinda feels like they put the back cover in the wrong place--not very conclusive
@2ck@bookrastinating.com
@freemo euh. the things we do for art
@molly0xfff 👌 I put celery and carrots in mine so it's a bit chunky . basically this https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/simple-tomato-sauce-recipe3-1942273 though I can't be bothered to follow an actual recipe anymore
@molly0xfff who other than our grandmothers keep their stove tops clean?
what all you put in your sauce?
@readsteven but I was thinking more for emergencies with comms unavailable for with real astronauts than your fictional scenario
@readsteven my understanding is most dead people who sign from an early age have better visual processing abilities than your average joes, so I am less worried about the issue of managing attention. on the other hand, I recall learning about this dual modality to the visual system where different visual signals might be overlaid across the same parts of the visual field while remaining legible. i forget exactly how that was meant to work though, and it was just theoretical, but it was suggested this could allow denser information displays for similar extents
@readsteven you know, I was actually thinking the other day that teaching sign language should be required for astronauts. maybe closer to the broad sign language of the "Belters" in The Expanse fiction series than ASL or something, so you can sign in bulky space suits and over greater distances
Comparing meat vs plant based diet
@eqe ars Technica did a story on it recently
@peterdrake slide whistle? gotta have a slide whistle
@hugh you'd have to be second to last at least. never occurred to me other
@hugh I think the people who want to work on the problems you prefer are working on them already and the rocket folks are already aware of those problems and chose rockets instead. for the rest (those funding or supporting these efforts), I don't think it's an either-or proposition
Some criticisms of BookWyrm.
This is for version 0.4.2, but it doesn't look like these things have changed up to 0.4.5. Some of these may also be federation issues rather than being a problem with BookWyrm per se.
- Searching for a book and adding a start date doesn't add the book to your shelf
- starting a book doesn't generate a status for followers
- my activity feed doesn't show my activity
- I can't add a book from my profile or the home page. I should be able to add a book from nearly every page there are books
I might post these as issues on their tracker.
@chris sincere good luck with publishing. for those of us who can only manage brief snatches of disconnected dialogue, even getting a draft manuscript together is a real feat.
I'm going to post some of the things I'm reading as @2ck@bookrastinating.com
A capable software engineer and aspirating (sic) cook. Also posting about space stuff (mostly NASA) occasionally
