Adam is a pixel artist who creates images within the technical constraints of the ZX Spectrum computer of the 1980s. You can follow at:

➡️ @helpcomputer0

The Spectrum hardware couldn't cope with more than two colours next to each other, so the art based on it has a very distinctive look.

Shameless self promotion! In my data visualization struggles, I often find myself searching "matplotlib colors" far too many time -- so I wrote a tool to display them in the terminal! Colorbars too :) github.com/AstroBarker/mplcolo

Ended up dumping some thoughts about ADHD-adjacent stuff and attention dysregulation and, believe it or not, pen plotters over on birb site while plotting something earlier:

Happy Friday! It's time to play #1vs2 again.

Last week's results: 2 point sources! Ya'll did really well. @holochromatic won a free sticker (can you message me a good address to send it to?)

Do you think this Chandra X-ray observation of a supermassive black hole is 1 or 2 X-ray point sources?

I will send a black hole space time sticker to someone who guesses correctly!

Other cool space stickers can be found at: etsy.com/shop/XtraGalacticStit

On the bird app, I play a game with my followers called #1vs2.

I show X-ray data of supermassive black hole from the Chandra X-ray telescope, and ask my followers if they think it's an image of a single point source or a dual point source (aka possible a pair of SMBHs)!

For the smallest separated SMBH pairs, it's not very easy to tell if the data is 1 or 2 !

What do you think? Is this a single or a dual? I'll send a sticker of a black hole cat to someone who guesses correctly!

Watched Star Trek: Strange New Worlds last night and I was pleased they went straight for the notion that Star Trek is a post-post-apocalyptic setting. Like, it’s a hopeful future, but also a warning.

@mhoye love it. I have a huge collection of music from A. R. Rahman (composer, producer, etc.). maybe it's just me but the bass guitar seemed kinda quiet

> School officials soon announced that the new name would be "The Antonin Scalia School of Law", but changed their minds after observers noted that this could be abbreviated "ASSLaw". Several days later, school officials announced a new new name: Antonin Scalia Law School,[20] a decision ratified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia on May 17.[21][22]

Missed opportunity, if you ask me.

There's a group of fossil bivalve mollusk with genus name Megalodon.

There isn't much online about them, but ask GPT-3 to write a press release about them and it will generate lots of "details" about how it's a giant terrifying predator.

looks like they hung around😄
(at least, I think it's the same pair. I'm not great at telling them apart within a species)

@lown I'm more lay reader than scientist, but since for most of the articles I'm reading, the topic is relatively new to me, I want to do a brief survey of the literature. something that could help there is showing the number of citations in other publications for papers the linked article cites, suggesting how influential that work is -> which papers to look to next... really though it's better to annotate the article itself or just the list of citations for that

Hey scientists: at my work Hack Day I want to build something to show extra information about scientific papers quoted in news articles. In a perfect world where all metadata is accessible, what sort of information do you think would be most useful for lay news readers to have? :arrows_clockwise_ms:

I don't often tweet about roles at labs.quansight.org, but this one feels a little special🙂. We're hiring for a Pandas maintainer!

@dpthorngren something about how totally black the surround is and the sharp edge with the surface makes this look fake to me. maybe I'm used to images with more distortions or to planets worth fuzzier edges because of their atmosphere?

Apropos of nothing, here's a nice picture of Saturn's moon Mimas, with Herschel Crater prominent on the right. This image was taken in 2010 by the Cassini spacecraft shortly before being caught by it's tractor beam.

Saw a pair of barn swallows outside my house just a little while ago. I don't usually see them I think, so it was nice. Sadly, my video of their activity was pretty short and not very good :(

I'm giving a short intro to #openscience (very broadly defined) to PhD students this week.

What are the things you wish you had been told as a PhD about how to practice Open Science?

What still confuses you to this day?
