@pikarl they're both cool though
@niconiconi the "turn to non-verbal" in his Amiga art reminded me of the #smbc blog post here: https://www.smbc-comics.com/comic/donation
regarding older folks investing more time in small pleasures rather than grand ideas

> The Mader–Ott Harmonic Analyzer (MOHA) is a high-precision mechanical instrument for determining the coefficients of a Fourier series.
> With the reactivation of the mechanical harmonic analyzer, we have been able to reproduce earlier results that showed that at least the lowest 25 Fourier coefficients [..]
> Considering the fact that the analysis of the first 10 coefficients of our test signal took on average about 2 hours, the title of this contribution seems justified. #retrocomputing
@jmw150 yeah, I guess I understand that. like I recall reading all of "The Be File System" and being rapt with attention, but also knowing it's only relatable because I had had a systems course the year prior.
it's also something that has always eluded me with...I guess you'd call it formal mathematics--basically, math for math's sake. a bunch of the structures don't stick in my head because I can't ground them in things I can use for something other than more math. parametric curves? no problem: I can use those to draw smooth curves and surfaces for 3d modeling. lie algebras? ...static
@szczezuja I don't have a client for that protocol. I was hoping you could tell me something about it
@szczezuja hi. so what is this astrobotany thing? some kind of game?
@annika what's this to do with astrobotany? or how do you understand that term?
#youtube is just extremely bad at showing me updates from channels I'm actually subscribed to. I happened to go to my dashboard page and then I see updates I missed. They show recommendations for stuff after every video: opportunities to show me things I explicitly asked to be shown. Instead they show me crap I wasn't looking for.
@jmw150 IDK how you mathematicians do it. I got bored like 6 slides into his presentation
@jmw150 ok. I didn't think that much went into switching TTYs. figured it was more like clearing a screen buffer and redirecting some device events. honestly this is the first I've really thought about it at all in 14 or so years of using Linux
@jmw150 hmm 🤔 how d'you figure?
It may be dead, but its ghost will haunt corpo intranets and industrial control systems for years to come

@trinsec thanks🙂 life goes on
(just not for the baby birds. those are dead)
unexpected levels of jank remain in the #Linux desktop experience: my laptop touchpad's middle button stopped working, but it started working again after I changed to another TTY then back
death mention
so, they all died. I saw one on the ground yesterday morning; the one in the makeshift nest was dead; and then I found the last of them dead on its back on the ground this morning. the parents are still around and have returned to the nest, but I'm not sure they'll stay.
Sorry if you were looking at this thread expecting something sweet or uplifting, but life ain't a fairytale.
I'm not sure if #wordle has just run through all the common words or if they're sabotaging it. some really dodgy ones lately
