Okay, first toot.

I'm a spatial data scientist who will hopefully receive his master's degree in early 2023.

I was obsessed with Palaeontology throughout my youth, though I loved pretty much everything revolving around natural and technical sciences, then switched over to Geology when that was the only option to even get in contact with Palaeontology in Germany. Had to drop out though because I failed my math exams.

Switched over to another college studying Geomatics and fell into love with the handling of spatial data, and took a personal liking to old and ancient maps.

After receiving my Bachelor's I had a hard time finding a job, so I worked a brief time as a surveyor.

I was looking for a job when Covid struck, making things a lot more difficult, so I decided screw this, back to university, hence starting my master's program. Joined an IT company through my friend and stuck with the awesome people here throughout the past year, and I hope I will be able to continue to do so once I'm finished.

In my free time I love to read, play video games, host ttrpg sessions, and cook. I also teach self defense classes and host self defense and violence prevention courses at schools and offices.

Currently trying to turn my life around, and stop trying to romanticise eidetic memorization of stuff and turn it into something of a success story for my life, while trying to hold my impostor syndrome, self-doubt, and dread of having missed out in life because of it in bay.

With the stress of my thesis and life choices looming above me, expect a lot of confused screaming on my end ✌️

@shibaprasad @trinsec Thanks. I just found the abundant Preferences options and that's helped answer a lot of questions! May not need an app after all.

A reminder for anyone new to mastodon who might not be happy with some of the racist and bad actors out there on other servers... Just import the fediblock list to your personal blocks and you will be safe from the vast majority of bad actors.

I took all the domains from https://fediblock.neocities.org/ block list and put it in a csv file that can be imported so you can block all hateful ...

@lydiaconwell @GoatsLive Oh thank you for posting this!! We had goats growing up and I miss them so much! Even watching them sleep :)

@peterwhisker What is domain subscription and how do you set it up?

Newbie Qoto Question: I like that qoto has quote and bookmark options, as well at the extra "..." list. But I prefer to access mastadon outside my web browser (using Mastonaut currently) and it doesn't show those options. Is there a better web app (for mac) or a trick for this? Thanks!

@benjaminwittes Wow -- That's like something out of a Pixar animation.

@nbatalha Welcome astro from beautiful Santa Cruz! You may find local communities with common interests at some of the science oriented servers (you can have more than one). I personally like qoto.org (robust server and very active), fediscience.com (verified published scientists), and mathstodon.xyz (all manner of math nerds).

My new pet peeve: Twitter refugees who use mastadon to… post retweets from twitter. Which usually look something like this, and open up a twitter window if you click on the links. C’mon folks, be here or be there. And if you must share something you saw on the bird, just do a screenshot and then toot it with some original content.

@scottjshapiro Oh mannnn, don’t RT tweets here. If it’s more than simple text all that shows up is a bunch of twitter links, which then open a twitter app or window, which kinda defeats the whole purpose of migrating, no? This is what it looks like.

Just a reminder to all the new arrivals here:

These instances are NOT commercial entities like #Twitter ... someone is paying the bills for servers and networking, and the massive influx of people like us are raising those costs enormously.

Be a good citizen, checkout the "About this server" link, and if you can, make a donation towards costs.

A good reminder because people on TV will be using this irresponsible language constantly to describe the vote count

RT @MattGlassman312@twitter.com

A reminder that there’s no horserace aspect to counting votes. No one “pulls ahead” in the count or “makes up ground” or “loses their lead” in any real sense. It’s just an artifact of the process, the order in which votes are counted, an order part mandated and part random.

@john I’ve been thinking that too! I hope new folks are chipping in to the patreons and buy-me-coffees.
