Can we say "morons" now. I'm not sure. Did that one slide off the end of the treadmill yet?

@freemo @trinsec

@freemo

The quality studies on the effectiveness of respirators show that they are more effective than the vaccine. And unless you have evidence for transmission via some quantum nonlocality mechinism, isolation prevents spread of the disease. Those techniques are proven effective. China used them, we didn't. And the results show it.

>"...There are **tons** of other factors, many of which have nothing to do with decisions the government or the people made.."

Like what? The weather? It's more than 100:1 difference in death rate. Other countries that also had zero-Covid strategies did very well, too.

@freemo

Results speak for themselves. Who did a much better job at protecting their citizens?
China.

@trinsec

What's the current infection rate and death rate in China? What's the death rate in the US and Europe? How many people have died in total in China versus other countries? Who is more free to go where they want, a Chinese citizen living in a relatively virus-free country, or someone in the US who can't walk across the room without losing their breath?

How do you measure success?

In China when someone is infected with COVID-19, they lock them up in a quarantine center until they are free of virus.

In the US when someone is infected with COVID-19, they lock them up in coffin and bury them 6-feet underground.

@peterdrake

This is one the few successful government policies -- mitigation of earthquake damage because of building standards. The western US and Japan do so much better than many other countries at withstanding large earthquakes.

Thank you for your input. Yes, "properly worn" is important.

Make sure you do a seal check each time you don your respirator, and check it periodically while you wear it.

Even an improperly worn N95 is better than a typical cloth mask, much better. The California study showed this. (Cloth masks usually create more air resistance than N95s because the size of fibers in cloth is so much larger than the melt-blown fibers in respirator filter media. N100 resistance depend on the specific model, I think.

It's really foolish to wear cloth masks at this point, when respirators are widely available, are more comfortable to wear, and they actually work.

@erictopol

Have you ever heard anyone from mainstream media ever say that it is wrong that a million Americans died because of what the CDC did (hording 100s of millions of respirators during the pandemic, and telling people to take their masks off), and that policymakers should be held accountable for what they have done to our country?

@kristinmbranson

Isn't that kind of what Watson did on Jeopardy?

@kristinmbranson

Make sure your respirator is NIOSH approved, rated N95, N100, or P100. (FFP2 or FFP3 under the European standard.)

Cloth masks and KN95 masks are not effective enough to stop COVID-19.

@TheSneakySneaker

You're right. I used 1182 deaths from nuclear power plant accidents, which includes a mid-range of estimates of indirect deaths from cancers following the accidents. But I simply compared the two death totals without accounting for time.

Real full-production plants have been around about 50 years vs. 3 years for COVID-19, so 5000*50/3=83,3333 times. But also, that doesn't include indirect deaths from the pandemic like increased suicides, violence, etc.

So the actual factor should be about 90,000 to 100,000 times more likely to die from the COVID pandemic than you are from a nuclear power plant accident.

In the US, there are currently 8 times as many deaths due to COVID-19 as there are to the flu.

A properly worn respirator, like a N95 mask, prevents infection and spread of disease from all variants of the flu and COVID-19.
