@Nick_Stevens_graphics @planet4589 There is a picture of a "Pittsburgh Steak" with a crucial follow up question. The thread makes a great read!

RT @xkcd@twitter.com

(Thread) In the first What If? book, I answered a question about cooking a steak by dropping it from space. At one point, I commented—jokingly!—that if anyone put a steak in a hypersonic wind tunnel to gather better data, I’d love to see the video.

Well, I have good news.

Every news outlet should stand up a Mastondon instance for their reporters & staff.

It’ll be great to see GivennameFamilyname@mastodon.famousnewspaper.com or whatever domain they want to use.

Built in verification. Every reporter for the Washington Post on a washpo domain. Every reporter for the New York Times on an NYTimes domain. Etc, etc.

Plus the “local” feed for each instance becomes a feed of all the posts from that institution mixed together — providing extra discovery.

Hey, remember when you joined the fediverse and someone showed you kindness and helped get you started?

Do that for the next wave that is about to join in. Show them this is not the hellscape the birdsite is.

All those journalists banned on Twitter...and all the news organisations you work for - can you pls just set up on mastodon permanently. Short term transitional pain for long term gain.

@Pwnallthethings Elon is so great at driving people to new places. He should start a car company or something.

Romaq boosted

Consider how suddenly there is a spike of #TwitterMigration as soon as Elmo bans several journalists, and their media orgs complain publicly.

Clear indication that if media orgs decided to move away from :birdsite:, others would follow.

And sure, these media orgs are now between a rock and a hard place, having to potentially leave their presence there built over a decade. But they put themselves there, by promoting walled gardens for a decade.

They have some reckoning and introspection to do.

Hope these newcomers remember to respect the customs of their Mastodon elders (people who have been here for six to eight weeks)

@TheRaDR And this caught my attention on the birdsite after seeing a post by @brynntannehill here. Cool!

If you're new to Mastodon/Fediverse I suggest making an introductory post with #newhere and/or #introduction hashtags.

If you're not new here, I suggest following the same hashtags to welcome our new friends.

Oh Hai! I followed you here from the Bird Site after you posted your tweet of links! I look forward to bragging about your poster I own here also.

Beware those who think "I don't understand" or "doesn't make sense" is the same thing as "must be wrong."

They will try to convince you that their own brand of "common sense" is the only logical conclusion regardless of evidence/proof to the contrary.

@Dennis1212

Yeah, I can see that being a tough one. "We could cure the bleeding at the cost of killing you with stroke" is not a good thing to hear.

Good luck. I'm thinking of some kind of plant hanger that you put like a floor lamp, then you can sit with the plant hanger suspending your hand. That's be awkward, and you have your beau to try to help while *NOT* getting Covid. Good luck. No need to respond if you need to save your typing for important things. I'll keep watching for updates as you can produce them. :)

@Dennis1212 Oh good for an update! Yeah, the "stop bleeding please" problem. I'm glad they were able to help.

My mom is on dialysis. She needs this to live. Her fistula (a crafted vein to facilitate the dialysis procedure) became infected, so last week she was to have the infection removed drained so she could proceed with dialysis as normal.

Something went wrong (she's thousands of miles away from me) and is still in the hospital. She doesn't have sepsis, but the doctors were looking for something in mom's brain because she wasn't "responsive."

My sister: She needs dialysis.

Dr: She's not very responsive.
Sis: She's in pain. She needs dialysis.

Dr.: Well, we just want to...

Sis: She does what you want. She squeezes your hand, she wiggles her toes. Mom's in agony. I wouldn't respond much to you either. DIALYSIS! NOW!

I don't think my sister is terribly impressed with mom's medical care. But then again this is Indiana, home of "let's legislate the value of Pi to around 3.2 because this guy will sell his theory to us on squaring the circle cheap for our education programs!" forbes.com/sites/kionasmith/20

SO glad I left Indiana! And I'm glad you got the medical attention you needed. I do keep an eye out for you, and I appreciate the update.

I can't find it at the moment, I'm distracted with personal life issues. But there is consideration for a loss of some technology. Here's one for you... suppose with Putin's dying gasp, he orders the destruction of LEO.

state.gov/russia-conducts-dest

This was tested. Last year. With Russia's cosmonauts in harm's way. Destroying LEO with a Kessler Syndrome Cascade is trivial. It also makes it impossible to replace satellites in higher orbits, and it could take centuries to clear. Yup... I have pressing things to worry about. Personal "ima not talk about it publicly at this time" stuff. And then there's "Putin's dying gasp" and what it could portend.

The petty games of pretend godlings on Mastodon are simply annoying, and I'd really like to just use the system without having the instance I'm using be cut off because of the incompetence and lies of jealous, antifa wanna-be overlords. If it wouldn't be too much trouble it'd be great if those morons would just find something else to screw with, someone else to screw over. But I'm tapped on energy to deal with it at the moment. Priorities, I guess. But yeah, I'd like Mastodon to stick around for at least a while, as it is useful to me. For now.

Long term? In the end, we're all dead. Accordingly, I'll make the best memories I can with those I love. Mastodon *is* a part of that. I'd really please let's not just trash it until something better presents itself.
