Ahh... I missed it because it's not there on that busy thread, at least here in fedilab... Found it on the web ui.

And I wish I knew a way to mute notifications on a specific thread. :/

@freemo I just finished reading Loserthink, Scott Adams' new book. On this very happening thread right now, it's tempting to reply to posts with photos of pages from this book. I found myself engaged in what he calls Loserthink early on, tried to pull back from debating the meanings of words, but moral equivalency, ends justifying means, and more unhelpful ways of thinking are quite readily on display. I'm glad I read the book recently.

I think it's less life payment for services (and I don't buy Christmas presents every time I expect them to clean their rooms), and the more basic, brush your teeth before you at go to the park. Going to the park isn't payment for services of teeth brushing. I'm giving the gift of basic life skills in addition to the gifts. So they really all get 5 instead of 4. :)

@khird
The gifts are still theirs, but yes, there's conditions... Like needing a license to drive a gifted car... Or at least clearing out the clutter blocking your drive way in order to park in it.

Each of my kids got a stocking and 4 gifts for Christmas. But they can't have free reign over their gifts until their rooms are clean... Still not that motivated to clean their rooms. Maybe by next Christmas?

In the end, this seems to be about how the alternative right self identifies. But their own label is that it's different from, not part of the right. An alternative universe would not be a subset of the universe, but something different from but coexistent with. Mac OS is an alternative operating system, not a subset of windows OS.

So I don't think X and Alternative X are the same thing, by definition, but clearly 2 different and contrasting options.

As for shared values, I see shared values of the alt right and the left, you see values shared with the right. I suppose it's all a matter of perspective.

Can take off too protest ANYTHING? Seems like there's room for some pretty creative protests without violating school policy.

@timorl
Interesting. So if the label is alternative right, you take that to mean nothing more than a part of the right. I'm not sure I've heard that use of alternative before, I've always seen it used more or less as the dictionary defines it, which is to draw a clear distinction.

You're right, I don't identify with the evil motives you assign to the right, which makes it all seem like an effigy to attack, rather than any kind of objective perspective.

But I'm not a political theory expert. I tend to think along the spectrum of big centralized government power (left) to less government (right). But I know that's not how everyone sees things. Your spectrum seems to go from good (left) to bad (right).

Merry Christmas, Jesus is an actual dude who was born and is God and died so now you can live forever. All of that is real! Yay!

I've got snow at my home in Denver right now. Sad that this is the last snow I'll ever see here.

@timorl
I'm not sure that calling yourself an alternative to the right makes you part of the right. Seems to be the opposite.

I'm also unsure of what values are shared between the right and the alternative.

Do you have a chapter and verse for where Jesus was beating politicians with whips? Jesus was seeking to protect the place of prayer, where the place where non jews were allowed to worship was turned into a marketplace, preventing people from worshiping.

I suppose the analogy would be to be against those who get in the way of free exercise of religion?

Jesus taught to fulfill one's obligation to the government, but responsibility for moral behavior was individualistic. I'm not sure that's anarchy. He didn't teach against the government, but rather for personal responsibilities.

He didn't stop anyone from following him and his teaching, regardless of which background they left behind to do so. "Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more" is what he taught, forgiveness and repentance.

I guess I could see how someone could put together that meme from a very partial understanding of select phrases pulled out of context. I tend to have a response to that because all sorts of wrong has happened throughout history from people running with a very partial understanding of select phrases pulled out of context.

I think it's a good point, though, that the right is willing to identify a line and say : that's too far, it's unacceptable and the extremists claiming to be on the right are not part of us. The left has no line of extremism that is too extreme to be part of the left.

And that's used as we see here too deny its existence. If we don't label anyone on the left too extreme, it means there's no extremists on the left. (In other contexts the left also also labels everyone on the right as extremists, so extremist means everyone to one side of me on a spectrum, and no one on the other side of me.)

It seems healthier to know how far is too far, and when to deny those who claim to be associated with you.

I've used libib for cataloging my library and Good reads for tracking what I've read /am reading. I wouldn't mind it all being in one place (and not Amazon's), but... Enter 200 items for free, as many as you like for $10 (year) or $25 (life).

At some point I may take the time to try the free version, but it wouldn't get me very far.

What strange takes on Christ. I wonder what the source material is.

I stopped reading after one woman in Florida. This seems to be cherry picked hyper local stories, about one crime in Chicago, one weirdo in Florida, etc., rather than trends as the title indicates.

In other news, looking at trends, this is the best decade ever...

Interesting how one's perspective and how things are framed make it seem like the best of times or the worst of times
