This is one of the big topics that people are bringing up as they discover the #fediverse

Let’s game it out, shall we?

Suppose I’m a total d*ckhead. You know, like one of those guys we’ve left behind on the bird app. Racist, homophobic, perhaps just addicted to trolling and starting sh*t.

I hear about the new pachyderm playground and decide I want to show up and start trouble with my trolling.

What happens?

Fedi vs advertisers speculation

If the Fediverse becomes sufficiently popular, the following might happen:

1. Advertisers start using tags or direct messages to get into people's eyeballs.
2. We can block individual accounts, or servers that allow this sort of thing, but it's easy to set up new servers.
3. Moderators (or maintainers of public block lists) adopt a defensive policy of not federating with any server that hasn't been around and active (with believable human conversations) for at least, say, a year.
4. This makes it very hard, but not impossible, for individual people to set up new servers; they just have to create a community through some other means and hang out in their isolated space (or with each other) for the first year.
5. An industry arises of using AI to create thousands of fake "communities" that, once federated, let loose with the advertising.

Alternately, after step 1, we might start using anti-spam software to filter our tags/DMs the same way we currently filter our email.

Oh dear. I've just been informed that collecting the names of every person on the planet for my naughty and nice lists is, and I quote, “a significant and wholly irresponsible breach of #GDPR “.
I'm going to hand out about 8 billion consent forms soon. If you could all get them back to me ASAP that would be appreciated.

It seems they've set up a poll, without notifying the people who were questioning the policy (link below). They've also blocked me for posting my opposition on that thread!

@mergerson @albinanigans Do you think there's a way to let the people who are trying to protect their mental health (some people literally can't deal with the intense feelings that come with these topics) do so, while also allowing open discourse on these extremely important subjects? If a server has established itself as a "no politics w/o warning" space, is that inherently oppressive? Should people not be allowed to create those spaces at all?

I don't know how to protect both groups' needs.

@Empiricism @stanstallman @mergerson "Racist" is a powerful, harmful label, because #racism is so powerfully harmful to its victims. Before you choose to take part in harm someone, you have an obligation to do due diligence in assessing the fact, rather than just hitting a reboost button or writing some angry statement of condemnation.

It's delightful to work towards a #mastodon #coop for #Canada with @evan and other lovely folks. Thoughts so far:

The #Twitter #migration creates a sense of urgency. But that rush is at odds with creating safety, a broad leadership team, real accountability structures...all the things that might actually make for a healthy community.

We've seen plenty of fast-start sites. It's hard but powerful to slow down & create conditions for lasting success & inclusion.

Posted in response to some attitudes I’ve seen on here:
If your “liberalism” requires the erasure of Black Christians so you can identify #Christianity with white supremacy, the erasure of gay Christians so you can identify Christianity with homophobia, the erasure of trans Christians so you can identify Christianity with transphobia, and the erasure of liberal Christians of all identities so you can identify Christianity with Christian Nationalism…
That’s not #liberalism, that’s bigotry.

Again, a quick and dirty analysis, but if I have no bugs then the 1% largest #Mastodon instances accounts for 84% of all users.

The top 5% accounts for 97% of all users.

We can say that the system is effectively centralizing around a few instances, and this might be a problem for the overall stability and sustainability.
