They are both germanic tribes, to be clear. The Anglo-saxons went to Britain around the 5th century while the vikings were a north germanic tribe who was more dispersed, as sea-travelers. They are considered different populations, with different languages and history, even though both of indo-european heritage, coming from the Germanic people. What's racist in it? I thought it was commonly accepted historical knowledge
@Jurassicnps
Is this supposed to mean that you agree, that you don't agree, for what reason(s)..?
I find it hard to communicate with you, please consider that we may be from very different contexts and making arguments explicit helps a lot =)
I completely agree that the genetic difference doesn't define a culture though, or make for an efficient categorization of humans. I am not sure who is proposing that point of view in this conversation at all.
It can have some statistical meaning, if something.
I just wanted to know what you meant, not the whole internet, but ok.
"Small" and "significant" are usually related to the context.
For example, people from Sardinia, who have a pretty similar genetic, have a very high incision of favism. That is, they are more resistant to malaria, but allergic to fava bean. That is really important when you are cooking dinner.
Thalassemia (a blood genetic disorder) is more common in European, South Asian, Turkish, saharian people.
Other differences are countless, from the high incision of diabetes in some populations due to different metabolism, to the how much you could expose youself to the sun.
Now, you think those phenotypes are "insignificant" in an absolute way, that is not related to anything. I argue there is no absolute value of anything, and characteristics should be appreciated and considered as relative to what we are looking at.
Oh, I thought germanic tribes and vikings would have counted white too, for example.
But I'm a bit out of my depths on this phylogenetic matter
The same could go on for your example. It could be said "there is no Italian heritage, but Napolitan heritage, Roman heritage, Sicilian heritage". I guess when talking about "white heritage" you can broadly refer to those populations who had/have white skin and in the past few millennia have inhabited mostly Europe. It is a big grouping together, maybe useless, not sure that it would be incorrect though
Well... not really. I mean, there are physical differences between groups of people, which are now referred to as "populations" in more biological terms, but that doesn't really change the fact, just changing the word used.
I'm not saying there are precise boundaries between a race and the other, but in natural sciences there rarely are such boundaries anyway. Taxonomy is only accepted when it's useful, and in terms of dynamic of population it usually is.
I am not sure why animals would have races and humans not. But that's an honest perplexity of mine.
I like how you to get your point through you had to reveal your heritage. As if that makes any different to what you actually said.
I think I don't understand the context by which this phrase is racist.
I am not from an English speaking country. I don't think that in my country, Italy, "It's ok to be white" could ever mean something racist.
I mean, what can I possibly do if my skin is white-ish?
Problem would just arise with the opposite phrase, "is not ok to be black/yellow/white" or whatever.
@bluepurplerain
Could you define 'racist' and 'race' for me, please?
@Nyoei A very warm welcome.
I like rocks and Pratchett too, actually I was thinking if we should add a GNU Terry Pratchett to QOTO ( http://www.gnuterrypratchett.com/), if also @freemo is a fan!
@freemo
This is so nice. What equipment did you use?
How many talents do you have anyway, doc?
@LogicalBird hi, thanks for the introduction.
