Well #histodons, our friends on the bird site are busy discussing the New Yorker piece & Sweet's latest, even more offensive than before, comments.
A key point that explains a lot: he talks about "the way that we've traditionally done history." As @drsepinwall & many others pointed out, that "we" is the real problem here. The lack of self-awareness--even after myriad scholars pointed out the harm of his remarks--is staggering.
How do we defend the field of history when it is under serious threat from fascism and white supremacy when senior people in the field think this way?

I'm trying out a new #gamedev concept... Well, not really a new one, but new to me.
I'm trying to build a world entirely in code. Nominally a "text-based game", the idea is to take the Dwarf Fortress route of enabling development of a deep simulation by eschewing design and art concerns completely. In this case it's a space ship captaining RPG.
Even if it never goes anywhere, it's still a really fun and challenging exercise.
I made the transition to #Mastodon the day Elon closed his deal. Looking back, the difference is surreal.
On Twitter, my feed was full of political trolls pushing my buttons and pissing me off and making me question my faith in humanity.
On Mastodon, I get to read opinions from many of the same people I respected over there... but also I get brief, random windows into subcommunities like #Mosstodon, which is a delightful group of nature weirdoes and scientists posting pictures of moss they see out in the wild. It's so wholesome and positive that it restores my faith in humanity.
I think I've leveled my English listening skill to the point that I can understand Cocteau Twins's songs
Writing and grammer on the other hand though...

The Prince of Tide Pods
Truly embarrassed to be an Oklahoman today:
1. OK House censures Rep Mauree Turner (D-HD88, which is in Oklahoma City), accusing them of harbouring a "fugitive" in their office after a recent incident at a protest by 2SLGBTQI+ activists at the Capitol. Turner was stripped of their committee assignments unless they issue a public apology to the OHP.
Rep Turner is non-binary, Muslim, and Black. And I have used their correct pronouns.

2. I was kind of expecting this, because we suck, but the referendum to legalise recreational cannabis is not going well for the YES crowd. As of 8 p.m. CT, with slightly less than half of precincts reporting, pro-legalisation is losing to anti-legalisation 36.99% to 63.01%.
I was one of the last voters at my precinct. I voted YES, because God knows OK isn't going to make the wealthiest Oklahomans pay their taxes.
I really fkn hate being an Oklahoman today. So embarrassed for my state.
Why do we suck so bad?

Woo, here's the most predatory #license I've seen on one of these "AI" sites that spring up like weeds.
From the Terms of Service for boomy.com, a place where one makes music tracks:
'You agree that Boomy is and shall be the sole owner of all right, title and interest in and to any Track. To the extent that you obtain or otherwise have any right, title or interest in or to any Track (or any component thereof), or any of your collaborators ("Collaborators") you hereby irrevocably assign to Boomy, on your behalf and on behalf of any applicable Collaborators, on a worldwide and perpetual basis, all right, title and interest in and to such Track (including any modifications that you or your Collaborators have made to any such Track), including any and all intellectual property rights therein, effective immediately upon the generation thereof.'
Dang! By using the site one is basically doing unpaid work for them. Impressive! :P
A consciousness somehow associated with matter.
Posting about culture, philosophy, politics, AI Art Tools, NaNoWriMo, Software Development occasionally, the relationship of consciousness to matter.

If your profile tells me nothing about you, it's less likely I'll follow you (back).
