I was chatting with a very senior colleague last week on improving disk IO utilisation and he modelled the system as an M/M/1 queue to evaluate the impact of the idea we were brainstorming. This was so cool and got me quite excited!
It also got me very curious about other real world examples of applying queuing models. I am considering going back to the textbooks to relearn queueing theory.
[I would appreciate a boost to get as many real world examples.]
I wanted to apologize to anyone who may have mistaken my pronouns in my profile as an intent to mock the use of pronouns.
The intent was always that I am happy to use whatever pronouns a person wishes that they feel best represents respect shown to them. Likewise I asked for pronouns to be used for me that also shows respect. It was intended to be a two way street not a mockery.
I have since added a note to my profile to make it quite clear my pronouns are not intended to mock.
@imabuddha oh, no! I follow(followed?) some accounts on there. So I can’t see them?
This is a lot for reaching out to other instances on a one time basis to ask if we could be unblocked by servers.
There have been many questions about server blocking #fediblock
On Mastodon.world we don't block many servers (yet). I don't block a server because other instances do.
We block a server when they host many accounts which breach our rules, and no moderation is done against those accounts.
If there's a server you just personally don't like, you can personally block the domain for your account.

Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 🍁!
Here's a nice read about Tolkien that was written on the day of MAGA insurrection (Jan 6, 2021)

Happy US Thanksgiving to those who celebrate and seasonally appropriate greetings to everyone else!
There's one week until a new season of Advent of Code begins! https://adventofcode.com
Each day in December, a new programming challenge is revealed. It's a wonderful way to play around with a new programming language or framework, or sharpening your skills in one you already know.
If you're interested and want to get a feel for what it's about, the challenges from the past years are available. E.g. last year: https://adventofcode.com/2021/
Moderation complication, nazis
I hesitate to boost this, because people only reading the headline might misread it as "someone is accusing Eugen of *being* a Nazi, which is either true or a melodramatic Godwinization" or "Mastodon is full of Nazis".
TLDR:
1. Our instance, qoto.org, came under attack by an actual, swastika-waving Nazi. Mastodon is by no means full of such bad actors, but they do exist. Freemo provides evidence and history of the attack.
2. This bad actor created enough disinformation noise that Eugen chose to delist qoto from joinmastodon to protect the reputation of Mastodon. This was a win for the baddies.
3. Debates over proper moderation and federation policies are complicated and can grow heated.
@freemo @Gargron @trinsec @khird #qoto
(Interesting thing I learned when autocompleting those tags: there are several accounts impersonating Eugen.)
@Elephantidae @freemo I am an example of someone who recently found Qoto from the join site. I think that the issue seems to speak to a serious question as to whether or not Mastodon is a decentralized federation or if from a practical standpoint, it has access determined by one person. And of course, I joined this instance because I felt it best met my interests, but also so I could interact with others in different instances.
Succumbing to the strategy of an attack by nefarious agents doesn't make Mastodon a safe or a welcoming place. All instances ought to see that as a vulnerability that needs to be combated.
I grew up in the industrial north of England, the only star I saw was John Barnes, so a camping trip out to Ashburton Lakes after a move to NZ with its bortle 1/2 dark skies stunned me, and hooked me on astrophotography for life.
This is Lake Heron, gorgeous bit of back country not often visited by tourists.

@crucifixGlitch @NanoRaptor I’m still thinking this is a joke, right?
In 2021, I started teaching myself #Java Programming for #Minecraft plugins using YouTube videos and whatever answers/explanations to things I could find in Google.
In 2022, I rewrote two of my server's core plugins entirely, making them better, more efficient, and have extra features.
My goal for 2023 is to create a brand new minigame plugin from scratch that will work just the way I want it to and give the players years of fun.
Before starting my server in 2013, I was a web developer working with PHP, which kinda prepared me but also really didn't prepare me. So having gotten this far without a teacher is something I'm really proud of and I hope to continue making progress in an effort to make my server even better.
I'm sharing my goal publicly because as they say... that adds accountability. Now I have to see it through or everyone will ask me about. lol
So... do you happen to have any good resources for learning Java at home?
@theorytoe don’t you mean “Hey, GOOGLE CAN YOU STOP…”? 😂
@RL_Dane 363 in a day! I don’t even have that many thoughts in a day haha
Just broke into software development. Currently struggling to grasp C!
