Computer science pioneer and United States Navy rear admiral Grace Hopper was born #OTD in 1906.

As far as I’m aware, she is the only person who has both a supercomputer and a US Navy destroyer named after her.

I was using ubuntu as early as this summer and I had not seen this, but apparently it's something everyone knows about. I love that Linux can perform really well AND be slightly non-serious.

When I googled this terminal text and browsed reddit I also learned about `apt moo` :)

@gamingonlinux I guess the definition of Linux is just "strange commands I don't understand." I can get behind that.

Raspberry Pi, hiring of ex-surveillance policeman

@derickflorian I think there is a difference between a retired cop who goes into something like ministry (as a former colleague did) where there is no connection to enforcement actions, and something like this situation where the cop is transferring survalence know how to the private market.

Raspberry Pi, hiring of ex-surveillance policeman

@antares I agree, a chaplain would hopefully not follow under ACAB, but I don’t know.

I see why people are upset, especially because as someone else mentioned RPi’s post was glorifying surveillance. But I think he should be rehabilitated. I don’t see how him being homeless or working at an overtly evil company would improve the system of policing. That said, if he did anything bad he should be held accountable, like stalking someone outside of his job duties. But then I also believe other criminals should be allowed to be productive members of society. In that case too I see parallels that if you bar someone from making a living then crime could seem like the only option.

I think the system is the bigger problem. I live in the US and the police state will continue to thrive because democrats and republicans love to give police more and more budget.

I think it’s fine if people want to stop buying raspberry pis - their choice. I also see how insensitive the foundation has been around the issue I just don’t see how letting this man transition into a job that benefits society is bad.

Hey, there's even going to be a #LinuxOnMobile stand at next @fosdem ! Not sure how much time I'll spend there, but expect to see folks from @mobian @postmarketOS @ubports & more :)

@derickflorian @whalecoiner @lizupton Thing is, there's a big difference between (a) hiring a former surveillance cop and (b) hiring a former surveillance cop and making an excited post about how your new hire was a surveillance cop and isn't that cool

@cjwatson @whalecoiner @lizupton That’s true. I agree with that. They are glorifying something that is extremely wrong. I wasn’t thinking of that.

@whalecoiner @lizupton yes, I was just noting that seems to be the issue that most people raised from what I saw.

@whalecoiner @lizupton I agree the handling is really bad, but I also feel like hiring someone who is no longer causing harm by being a law enforcement officer is a chance to rehabilitate him into a member of society. So I don’t think either side looks good. This is just my viewpoint though. I realize mine isn’t the prevailing view on this issue.

@josemanuel

First to make a few things clear:
I am autistic myself.
And I have a fairly good understanding of what those kids might go through.

What if they actually _like_ analyzing data and all that? Computers be damned, they're just tools, doesn't mean humans can't have a shot at it too.
Sometimes I am hyperfocused myself, then I make ridiculous lists of lists and whatnot. Waste of time? Oh, _absolutely_, you bet! But was it satisfying to me? Oh _yeah_!

They'll have plenty of time to learn how to socialize, but does that mean you need to put them in a fascist regime that only forces them to socialize and never have _fun_?

After one evening of socializing, I'll be _happy_ to have 3 weeks of no human contact. I don't hate humans, it is just that social contact is _utterly exhausting_.

Maybe try to understand _that_.

@Raspberry_Pi

Guys,

Y'all should probably make a statement about yesterday's kerfuffle.

It's not just the ACAB crowd that are ticked, a lot of people who otherwise like you are pretty mad about how the whole thing was handled.

If you don't believe me, my poll results surprised even me:

Raspberry Pi, hiring of ex-surveillance policeman

For those interested in my take on the Raspberry Pi take…

It seems like ACAB means we should completely remove people who are/were police from society including their means to make a living or further push them away and have them work for companies that are outwardly evil.

And if this person is criminal because of his actions supporting a police state than shouldn’t he be given a chance to re-enter society. I think therefore that Raspberry Pi should also hire a convicted felon to show they are committed to rehabilitating others.

I would much rather have this guy making lightsabers than become an advisor to Palantir or something else. I don’t have any love for active law enforcement officers but keep in mind its the system that is evil and not the individual people.

Note this is just my opinion and you can feel differently, but I will still be buying and using Raspberry Pis.

Really proud of myself so far. Got a raspberry pi server set up on my local network and I am in the process of setting it up as secure as my instruction following skills will allow. Then I will try to install minecraft java tonight and maybe see if my 8gb ram model could handle a minecraft bedrock edition on top of it!

It was overkill maybe but I got a “max endurance” microsd designed for security cameras so it can hopefully be more reliable over time.

Re Kyrsten Sinema: Good riddance. Now I only wish she wasn't on the team. In any case, she'll never be family. There's a difference.
