@Zyzzyva And I should mention - honestly, the best way to explore and handle the rich information here in fediverse is on a desktop or laptop computer.
A moblie is goo for quick things on the go, getting a map, etc, but reading is limited and TABS!!! Need Tons open.
Waterfox is my fave browser, and it handles the unbelievable load I am throwing at it perfectly.
Laptop, best. Desktop, for power users, multi monitor, but then it's tying you down to a desk. 😉
@Zyzzyva I would suggest you to try Fedilab Lite - I made a review and links, screenshots on this thread:
@Zyzzyva I liked Facebook for linking up with local people. I enjoy bicycles and cycling, and have many cyclist friends there.
But then the posts get very repetitive, and we might not have much of a connection other than the interest and love of bikes and riding them.
There is one part of the Fediverse which is called Friendica, and has a similar interface and logic. It fully federates with us here in Masto, I have an account there and can follow, reply to or mention anyone here.
@rgx@nerdica.net is listening. 😜
With so much to experiment, learn, read, all those fascinating wiki pages we end up with, like you described, my Friendica account hasn't seen more than some test use.
It does allow beautiful text formatting AND post editing too, Woot!!
But you need to connect to people, or it seems an empty place.
If you ever want to see how it is, there's a test server for trying out an account - it gets deleted in a week, and nobody minds what you do there, you are not embarrassed in front of an active instance.
https://tryfriendica.de/ is the URL
@Zyzzyva I am using the Mastodon web interface, on my laptop, and it allows the maximum post size as defined by the instance admin -- in Qoto's case, that's 65,000 chars max.
Plenty eh? 😜
Some clients (for mobile mostly) might have a hard limit of 500 chars, which is the usual default max size.
If that's the case, maybe consider changing to another client? Fediverse is good one too. Free from the F-Droid app store.
Don't worry as we are all learning. I have been here for only a month and feel comfortable, but still am surprised by things sometimes, and have many things on my wishlist to read or act upon.
Have fun, ask any questions if needed. 😉
@kosame Hello Kosako, and welcome to Qoto.
You are very welcome -- I am pleased that my post helped you. 🙇
Enjoy the network and all it has to offer. If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: https://lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-guide-to-mastodon-1828503235
Any question, just ask, and someone will try and help out.
Have a good day!
@Zyzzyva Yeah, it's true. The Local feed sometimes is slowish, it depends of the time of the day.
when it happens that some prolific posters are online simultaneously, some nice longer threads do develop.
I used to use FB, but was tired of the repetitiveness of the posts there. Plus the polarization, and people posting back and forth about an election that happened a year ago or more.
You can't change the results, but move on, people are playing into the politicians hands by doing that fan club cheering.
Glad you like the arXiv posts, as there's a lot of them flying by, lol. 😜
The Home feed is fun, with a manageable pace and interestign things flying by. Or we can get an account in a second instance, to liven up the quieter moments, or to research more delicate topics.
I do that, and it sometimes is very interesting, although I primarily post here.
An account in an instance supporting a different language is also a good idea, to practice and keep in touch with the culture. Got one, but haven't visited yet - I don't like leaving an account open without a minimum of info, avatar, etc. So it's on the To Do list...
Unbelievable that he would post what he did. How about it he was the one raped by 4 men?
...and then killed and burned afterwards?
Opened mouth and inserted both feet. That will hurt his life for sure.
Free books, read online. Many authors and genres.
Don't know how they do it, get away with it, but...
Found a website listing many, many books, including the one with the cover below, by Charles Bukowski.
https://bookfrom.net/charles-bukowski/
You CAN read the whole book online it seems, and they have many other authors. From trashy breathless romance novels to works we can be grateful to get access to. Android app for mobile if needed.
Rather cool. Librarian in me wants to spread the word. Hush, hush. DMCA is a thing.
They do have many of Cory Doctorow's books too, excellent sci-fi writer. https://bookfrom.net/cory-doctorow/
@Karthikdeva Ah, that sounds like a lot of good reasons. Do it. 😄
Rdio was really nice, their radio stations I still miss a lot. Spotify shows music on their default pages that has no relation at all with me.
But they do have a good library, amazing music, all there for your enjoyment. Times we live in!
I remember being so happy when some close friend would buy an LP of some group I was curious about. If you wwere lucky, maybe could loan it, or at least visit them and enjoy a session.
Music was played by albums, not tracks. Side A finished? maybe side B?
I still listen to music like that. And enjoy a moment in an artist's career.
@Sphinx Hope you managed to get some Zzzzzz.
Being on the screens for long before bed time is bad for that.
@ankur @_lunawinters
The way things look, I have a feeling you might wish to still be in 2018 during this coming year.
Expecting a lot of tension, maybe worse, with elections in US and all the polarization, armed citizenry, etc.
@Karthikdeva Never used Apple Music, have Spotify, ocassionally premium, sometimes just the free service.
I do miss Rdio, which I liked a lot and feel was better than Spot.
Why are you leaving AM? Just Curious.
@dalevross Well done, congratulations!
@dalevross@mas.to @dalevross@mastodon.social @dalevross
Hei Dale, it looks like you got it all right. Got three accounts already? 😉
Wow.. 😃
Welcome and enjoy ours, I think it's a rather cool place. The coffee pot is there on the corner. *points*

Not fair to talk about delicious food and no pictures. 😞

And the Obligatory picture, or it didn't happen.
@gmybird Hello IR, and welcome to Qoto.
Hope you enjoy your stay, if you have any questions just ask.
Have a good day...
@Craigvulcan Hello Craig, Peace be with you too. Have a good day!
@shibaprasad
Oh, just finished reading the two articles you linked to.
Truly makes one ashamed to be of the male gender. Creepy criminals, plotting and scheming, killing the young lady and trying to destroy her body.
And the guy posting with despicable arguments, on the second article you linked. OMG.
How stupid can people be. Always surprising.
Sorry for the doctor, may she rest in Peace, and for her family and friends, so sadly bereaved.
@susi123 You are very welcome, Susi.
Glad we have a place to meet and connect to new friends, here, online.
Regardless of us being on opposite sides of the planet, and many timezones away from each other, we are brought close.
Have a good day, friend. 😉
