@OSUPREME Hello Obeda and welcome to Qoto and the Fediverse.

Enjoy the network and all it has to offer. If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-gu

Your first post above was nice and polite, but please take a look at our rules page - some types of posts need to be protected with a Content Warning, if of an Adult nature. The page is here : qoto.org/about/more/

Thank you!

Have a good day!

@Sphinx It's never a bad idea - to place your foot when starting. If the vehicle was in gear (more common for a standard) it might jolt forward, or backward if the reverse gear was engaged.

Older cars did not have this, and it did happen to people. Newer ones added a sensor and won't fire the starter without the brake pedal depressed.

Some great replies there, thanks Kyle, well done!

You can visit their sites without having an account, instances usually have some posting exposed in their front doors. I did, looked around and was dismayed.

That was almost two months ago, and I immediately blocked their whole instance for my own account. Don't want to get annoyed here, but to enjoy meeting civil people, learning and building new things. hey are too destructive and corrosive for my taste.

@el_rafa If a user blocks a whole instance, it marks any content originating there as not desired fro this user. They won't see it, get replies or notifications from there.

It's possible that people there could post further, replies, or even new threads tagging the original Blocking user. He/she will not see them -- put people using other accounts would.

So the nastiness doesn't necessarily stops - a determined harasser could get an account in a different instance to circumvent the blocking. At that point, the user should appeal to their local moderation and admin team, who will go out and request a stop to the nonsense.

In extreme cases, when the user and the external instance admins are non-cooperative, the local instance might decide that this requires an Instance ban. A nuclear option, as it will block ALL users, good or bad, from that site.

This is unfortunately sometimes used in careless ways -- I wrote the blog post yesterday and made a pointed remark on how the admin of a Tech focused instance blocked us (ALL of Qoto.org, 6500 users and growing) without warning, consultation or notice.

I found that very petty and small minded. Disappointing. Posted a blog announce at his instance, which might lead to my account there being removed -- but certain things must be said.

Glad you liked our policy of no barriers unless there's trouble!

I personally block gab and related instances, simply out of despair at the nature of posts I saw there - scouting around their periphery, seeing the nastiness that shows in their open, public feeds. Not interested, TY.

@joey
formally, they are in the network.

But look at the stats -- 99.2% of all messages are In-House chat.

That's what caused my "Defederation" comment. They are not dialoguing with anyone.

@mewmew

Another gem found on fediverse.space.

The Stats for any instance include "Insularity" -- the percentage of all created messages in the instance which are directed to users in the same instance.

I had seen this mentioned, and now confirmed it.

This is what Defederation looks like. Not pretty.

Visit and zoom in and out for more detail, it's mind boggling. Ctl-+ or Ctl-minus to change map scale.

And I am happy to see I have made a personal connection -- TeDomum.net Write.freely, my blog's home. Is on the map! 😃

@realcaseyrollins Awesome! I had the same too, a productive day, after an early bedtime last night; was dragging thru part of the day.

Rest is very important.

@kashi You will have to wait until tomorrow morning, boss is asleep atm. ZzzzszZZZzzzzzz....

y@Sphinx Yes, it's due to dryness, happens to me too sometimes.

@realcaseyrollins Wow, very nice! I like how your parents cared about her expenses too.

Have a friend who is quite exploited by her two grand daughters. Merciless, they are .

Nice dinner!

* Is it Important, which Instance you are in ? *

Once again I had an enjoyable conversation, earlier today. Achso was there, and we continued a conversation from a day before. We discussed different things, and specially how choosing an instance to fit your needs and preferences is important.

My thoughts on the matter, and a detailed list of some instances I frequent.

On today's web magazine, live at : write.tedomum.net/rgx/is-it-im

Wasn't me only, Todon.nl shows some downtime earlier at fediverse.network.

Their stats show it online, although not for me yet.
Nice to have these tools.

@Anarkat Thank you, Anarkat! Boosting here from my instance, would like people to see that.

Nice, well done!!

@ghostdancer
Ah -- good to know. I think the Facebook Groups feature are the best they have at their site. It allows focused discussions, and full moderation, different privacy selections, etc. Well done, I enjoyed some good groups there, with knowledgeable users.

But haven't visited the site lately or posted in many months; just leaving my stuff there for now, but not adding any content.

The Book Club group at Hackers.town seems to be working well, I as happy to see that since I made the push for it to use this as a channel. Much nicer than a hashtag alone, and each participant gets personally notified of any new posts.

@achso@mastodon.social
The reason for my post was that we are getting a lot of twitter content, which the users eithe rhad saved, or new posts they want here too.

I agree there's a lot that's best left there. But there's also some good materials, specially large media organizations like Scientific american, The Economist, BBC News with full fledged feeds there and no presence here.

Those I try to bridge a few posts here and there when I visit my not very active twitter account. We got a barrage of copied twitter URL only posts here today - and as a mod and helpful guy, I made that post showing there's a better way.

A rich cross-post (which Renato's tool does wonderfully) is much nicer and valuable as content here than a nude URL only.

I do use both Moa and Renato's tools (with different trigger hashtags and destination mastodon instances for each).

Not to be abused, but a powerful tool if focused.

@renatolond

@ghostdancer You are very welcome, I came across the project by chance, seeing a post by William and starting to try and use it.

It's still in Alpha phase, but seems to work fine. We will need some moderation, controls to list access before a wider deployment; for now it could be spammed to death, sadly. But William is doing good work on it.
