@Rovine @mngrif @freemo @raining_night
I posted a new thread today with an update - I was able to post a longer message via Pinafore, using an account in another instance which allows 10,000 chars.

Did that with Pinafore, which I really like for it's speed and clean interface but with my qoto account is limited to 500 chars only.

From that instance, Pinafore was able to send a long DM to me here, and the Toot editor box showed a 10,000 chars when I first started typing.

The only difference is that the other instance uses glitchsoc, which is a fork from Mastodon.

Reading the docs a bit, it's a full install from Mastodon, can be upgraded to it, but it's not a simple add-on module.

if anyone is interersted, the report is here: qoto.org/web/statuses/10315671

@anoop Well done, Anoop!

I was glad the sun was shining and I able to go out for a bit. It's Winter here, and snow came early, but the sunny weather made me feel a bike ride was ok. I enjoyed it, being careful with the spots where snow had been packed into ice, no incidents/falls thankfully.

Way to go! ㊗️

@datatitian BTW, the post above was sent, processed and boosted by the two tagged groups; and it shows on recent posts in the group. :thumbsup_hmn_h2:

@datatitian @GuppeGroups

That is nice, Will, thank you!

Visited the page and just followed one of the listed groups, the @retrocomputing one.

Follow request entry from the gup.pe new page did n

ot work, but the suggestion it showed of entering the group address in my home instance search box did.

Screenshot attached, I tried twice, first without the leading @, then with full address as show.

@iamo no problem, thanks for letting me know. I noticed the follow request come in. 😄

I did a search for the "ocean" account you mentioned, and it's not here in our instance, I assume you mean this one: qoto.org/web/accounts/105

You can mute or block it from that page if you haven't done it yet.

Long post - test report, Pinafore client issue

@freemo I already found the answer, glitchsoc is a full separate version of Mastodon, with added experimental features.

Documentation here (for those curious to see what is different):
glitch-soc.github.io/docs/

It does have some nice enhancements, which I already noted on my very short experience there.

Long post - test report, Pinafore client issue

Long Posting using Pinafore - Testing and worked.

I have been trying out different fedi clients, looking for how they feel, speed and features, ergonomics and design.

Really liked Pinafore, which is simple to setup (runs on a web browser window, similarly to the Mastodon web client).

Pinafore is well built, well designed, simple and elegant. I liked it much!

However, I hit a significant SNAG, and had mentioned it to other people, in local conversations here at qoto and in others with friends in other instances.

The problem is, when I am using Pinafore to access my Qoto account, which has a very large, 65,000 characters maximum per post limit, in Pinafore (and similarly in Tusky also) I can only use the 500 characters usual post limit. 😞

That is a show stopped for me, as I like to write Long Form and develop ideas. Argh.

A friend from another instance mentioned that she could use it on her instance, and it worked.

The main difference we could see is that she mentioned having 'glitchsoc' installed, which I am not sure we have here at qoto.

I created an account earlier today at another instance, (for different posting and a lower profile). Just now I made a post size limit test.

** Test conditions:

- acess via Pinafore web client.

- the new instance server allows a maximum of 10,000 characters.

** Test method:

- to avoid clogging the public feeds with something irrelevant, I sent myself a Direct Message, DM, which is a normal Toot, which has the privacy flag set to DM.

- the same usual size limits apply to DMs, same as regular posts.

** Test Results:

- Even as I entered the text I could see the counter in the Toot editor box started up with 10,000 chars.

- as I typed and later copy/pasted a large block of text, copied from one of my posts here, all thru this the Toot button was enabled, and the counter was decreasing.

- that indicated the input was accepted normally, if using the same Pinafore client with qoto, it would GREY out the Toot button, show an angry RED line at the bottom of the edit box.

- the screenshot attached here shows the characters left counter at about 8,600; which means my post was already at about 1,400 chars length.

I hit the send button, and it was delivered to my qoto DM inbox perfectly.

Sucess! 😄

Conclusion, there's something missing here, I believe what is enabling the outside clients to work properly is glitchsoc being installed, or not; or maybe a configuration problem.

The footer of the instance's web client shows this message:

"Glitchsoc is free open source software forked from Mastodon. You can contribute or report issues on GitHub at glitch-soc/mastodon (v2.9.2+glitch)."

...which might mean the whole server setup is a custom, forked version of mastodon, not an addon?

@freemo Could you look at this? can we have glitchsoc or is it a full rebuild and too much work (which I wouldn't expect, certainly)

@sda

Thank you, so it was a large de-escalation in fact. Interesting to know. :thumbsup_hmn_h2:
@Pankaj_077

@sda
I think you are doing well. Use only what you need, and reduce the cost, privacy risk and anxiety from constant notifications.

I only carry one occasionally, other than when I am traveling and able to buy a local SIM card and service for reasonable prices.

Regarding the battery removal, I recall that being done on "Enemy of the State" film, which was quite interesting.

@dayvancowboy
Haven't tried it yet, I usually prefer coffee. I am curious too, so will try one of those days.

@Sphinx

@Rovine Supermarkets here were not allowed to sell any alcohol until recently, even now is beer, and only some locations. A very few ones might have a winery outlet small store at the front, but no one has distillates.

Should be easier in Scotland, yes. Here, alcohol import and sales are controlled by each province. The Ontario Liquor Control Board brings in about 2 Billion CAD in profit a year, into gov coffers.

Breaking Bad comes to RL ?

"It sounds like something from the award-winning former A.M.C. series “Breaking Bad”: The authorities charged two chemistry professors in Arkansas on Friday in connection with the production of methamphetamine.

The instructors, Terry D. Bateman, 45, and Bradley A. Rowland, 40, were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and using drug paraphernalia, the Clark County Sheriff’s Department said. Meth is a highly addictive drug that can be manufactured illegally with chemicals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

@Rovine I am here and suggesting it, but it's not something I would be able to do currently either.

Here in Canada, distilled spirits are highly taxed, way more than the already taxed wines and beer.

Any distillate will cost about $35 per bottle, that's about 26 USD or so. Too pricey for me.

Lemon is good for health, I would use it with honey for a sore throat, both of them help relieve it.

@Pankaj_077 An eye for an eye, that's been around for a long time, and keeps the grudges alive.

😔 But what to do when one is a victim? it looks different when we are the targets.

@dayvancowboy That sounds interesting, never tried it.

I collected some ripe rose hips a month ago or so, dried on the oven for tea making, lots of vitamin C and antioxidants apparently, and free from city park bushes.

@Sphinx

@Rovine Not to get drunk, but it's a nice and refreshing drink. With lots of ice, some sugar and lots of lemon, you dilute the alcohol to just make you a bit happy, not drunk.

I usually don't drink hard stuff, this one once in a while.
