@kashi That is a really nice illustration. And the story too. TY!

@helloworld Hi, and welcome to Qoto... 🙂

Enjoy the network and all it has to offer. If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-gu

We also have another new users guide, posted here : write.tedomum.net/rgx/suggesti

Any question, just ask, and someone will try and help out.

Have a good day!

@JulianRott Learning in different ways is always good. Some types of knowledge need physical training, fine motor control for example.

Some can be more abstract and work best in a focused, desk or blackboard centered way.

I do work and learn, plus teach, in both ways and don't consider one method superior to the other.

We still have paths to apprenticeship, and even people with higher education levels benefit from hands on experience. An engineer who doesn't know how to build can't design ok

@anarchiv I will write a blog post or more about it soon, there's so many good stories and similarities to the Fediverse. It felt immediately similar when I joined here.

Even the brawling with other sysops, which we didn't like, we did that as well, lol.

Great fun to be had, lots of coffee was consumed, talks went late into the night.

The network was worldwide, and sent international mail via phone calls. Data lines? not available at the time.

@anarchiv Fidonet? it was a network formed by independant system operators (sysops for short) in the days of BBSes (Bulletin Borad Systems) being the only computers you could reach and connect to from home.

We only had dial up lines, but it was amazing to dial up and connect to a place with information, software for download, online games. All of this for free in most cases.

People operated those as a hobby, all of them loved computing. It attracted similar people, which is how I joined. 1992.

@anarchiv

Brings memories of sysops battling it our on our local FidoNet network!!

Time goes on, humanity continues.

Fediverse is indeed quite similar to the wonderful pioneer that Fidonet was. Way before internet was accessible to the masses.

@anarchiv

Ok, thank you. I will look if I can't think of something more productive to do than see what the riff raff scuttle butt is all about. LOL... 😜

@DissidentKitty@radical.town

@IntegralDuChemin I think that is good and sensible -- I have done it in the past as well.

Add the seasonal Blahs of Winter in the Northern Latitudes and it's hard to read news and see so many misdeeds and creepy men in power situations.

Disheartening. I am glad to have found the fediverse and have so many interesting things to discover, learn, try out.

I love computers, including Vintage ones -- can't trow away a nice piece of hardware, so they proliferate here. Bicycles, same way.

@anarchiv

I would like to see more of them, maybe you can find and DM me some links later?

We have had great conversations in the Federated feeds, and your story telling has inspired me, as you know.

I am also present in different instances, including Todon which is aligned with my personal political beliefs.

I am willing to listen and learn, but what I have seen in this thread is simply poorly done mud-slinging.

@DissidentKitty@radical.town

@coldacid Thank you, the arguments I have seen have been emotional mostly.

But still is sad to see this happening.

@anarchiv @DissidentKitty@radical.town
Is that a problem?

When someone comes out attacking our home instance, a project we believe and work hard for, with a screenshot and a series of one liners on mobile phone, probably?

Expect a reply, I would imagine.

Instance Block Recommendation

@freemo
You need to see a specific post in this thread, below here, as its a serious accusation.

Instance Block Recommendation

To come out and advocate for an instance ban is regrettable, though.

Why not fight the real fights? there are places which harbour nasty people of various kinds. I would love to see your positioning about them.

If you care to see it, I wrote a long outline of my personal beliefs as an staff member in online communities, which I have been, in various places, over the years.

See it here, if interested: write.tedomum.net/rgx/qoto-mod

Instance Block Recommendation

@DissidentKitty@radical.town

I don't see what the occupation of a staff member as a entrepreneur has any relation with your requesting an instance ban.

Which in our federated space, you are free to propose, of course. And it seems you do have a number of sympathetic responses.

I have personally blocked a whole instance for political reasons, in my personal user account; which thankfully is a great feature, available to ALL users in the fediverse.

@requrious@mastodon.social @freemo (cont.)

I just came across a post by someone who spouses De-Federation of QOTO.org -- and has simply posted a snapshot of one of our pages, without a word, to support their case.

I stumbled upon a reply in that thread by sheer accident, in the Home feeds.

If anyone is interested, it is here : radical.town/@DissidentKitty/1

The post is Pinned at the top of DissidentKitty's user profile.

A number of users are posting supporting her views, a few disagree.

@DissidentKitty@radical.town is the author of the request.

re: Instance Block Recommendation

@mewmew

Nice to see someone understands. Thanks mewmew.

Now reading this whole thread, and it seems people have the idea there's no moderation at our instance. I assure you there is, I just joined the staff and have already spotted and stopped various problems.

I personally do NOT support offensive posting as 'free speech'; not being American, I have a different view of the subject. I would not get so involved and volunteered to help if the instance was a cess pit like some here imply.
