A few months ago I stopped crossposting from Twitter to Mastodon.

Why?

I discovered (as many of you have) that it's a completely different vibe here. Different people. Different habits. Different interests.

Zero algorithms.

And people here are more interested in deeper conversations.

Combined with the extra characters and (gasp!) actual editing capabilities, I'm making an effort to post unique content here that isn't just copied from Twitter.

I had real trouble wrapping my head around this. A lot of the imagery I produce is clearly for sighted people, so it was hard to say what blind people would or could get out of it. How can I explain my pictures?!

But the answer is STORY.

Don't fuss over the visual details "red hair" "left/right" etc. Tell what's going on. It's like going from animation to audiodrama. What's actually IMPORTANT about the picture?

Twitodon https://twitodon.com/ serves as a connection point - if they have a mastodon and used Twitodon at any point, it’ll recommend their mastodon profile to you. Even if they haven’t, it’ll register your twitter and mastodon association, so others can find you in the future.
There’s also Fedifinder https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ that lets you check for the people you follow, and automatically extract any mastodon account mentioned in their Twitter profile.

• #Tweetdeck is called “advanced web interface” in the Mastodon settings: Preferences/Appearance [x] Enable advanced web interface
  • It offers a Markdown content-type

• Retoot often! Stars are silent!

• Editing a post deletes it and re-posts it. Comments might get orphaned!

• Some instances offer more features than others: for example, https://qoto.org has quoted toots (RT), Groups, LaTeX, way longer toots and more!

• Most instances offer an API for bots like @poptoots. Also, there’s an instance for bots only: https://botsin.space

I think we as a society need to get into the habit of voluntarily supporting social goods (open source software, creative commons content, decentralized social platforms etc.). We fail to appreciate the hard work of these altruistic good people and yield without resistance to the money-hungry evil corporations. It is where nobody demands you to pay that needs your money and support the most for their survival.

Quick tip: if you camelCase your hashtags, people who use screen readers will have an easier time with them.

So, for example: #twitterMigration or #TwitterMigration instead of #twittermigration
