@saxnot I am not a nuclear engineer, but I cant go into detail on how I am related to nuclear projects. I can tell you I'm not an expert on nuclear though even if I am well read on certain aspects.
Basically the meltdown-proof reactors take usually take the form of a liquid. They work on two principles 1) the fissible material can not go critical as a fundamental property, this has two advantages: no meltdowns, and you cant easily make nuclear bombs out of it either for the same reason. 2) Since they are liquid a -plug on the bottom is designed to melt away above a certain temperature. This drains the liquid material into a protected pit far under ground. So no matter how hot it gets it cant melt through stuff or get out.
In this way they are considered melt-down proof. The most common example of this design is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_fluoride_thorium_reactor
"A new study has found that not sticking to a regular bedtime and wake-up schedule–and getting different amounts of sleep each night–can put a person at higher risk for obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension, high blood sugar and other metabolic disorders."
https://neurosciencenews.com/sleep-disruptions-metabolism-14174/
@freemo Firstly, I would say that the article directly quotes the authors of the paper in that "this provides some evidence supporting a causal link between irregular sleep and metabolic dysfunction." Second, the article clearly states that the converse hypothesis was not found. That is to say, the sleep duration and bedtimes preceded the development of metabolic dysfunction, not the other way around.
@theodraxis Ahh valid points then. I rescind my comments. I should have dug deeper. I was unaware they showed Granger Causality.
@savedr@freeradical.zone
There is at least some polution in the mirrors, negative enviromental impact from the occupied space, large impact on animals particularly birds (who often die as they fly past), etc.
I am not claiming it is worse or better than nuclear. Only that like any solution it is not free of consequences.
@theodraxis As a data scientist this concerns me. They showed correlation not causation. It would be just as valid from these findings to say "A new study has found that having obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension, high blood sugar, and other metabolic disorders put a person at high risk for an irregular sleep schedule.
@saxnot No system is fully secured from polluting the surrounding area. Nothing is perfect, not even solar panels in that regard (lots of pollution created to make it).. What one needs to ask themselves is how the levels of pollution on average compare to others.
We already know there are types of reactors which are fundementally incapable of having a meltdown. So even if all the safety measures fail there is no more chance of the core melting down than a solar panel. The physics behind the choice of nuclear material makes it impossible.
So since we can garuntee at a fundemental level that melt downs wont happen (As we can) then what is the argument? If its just pollution due to proper disposal techniques then we would have to compare how the pollution compares to other methods.
I'm not even sure what your argument against nuclear is, like why would safety being imperfect even matter when meltdowns are possible?
@saxnot Shouldnt that change your mind on low safety standards resulting from underfunding, and thus be an argument to ensure such programs get good funding?
Not sure why this is an argument against nuclear power, its an argument against underfunding nuclear power...
Regardless of if he is innocent or guilty there is NO excuse to confine someone in jail for a year with no trial and no bail. That is a disgusting abuse of due process. Even if found innocent after a year spent in jail he was effectively punished anyway (at least partly).
It amazes me americans can see a person told he will be in jail for a year without trial as the person pleads, their innocence, kills himself, and everyone cheers.
Why can't america see just how beyond lunacy things have gotten on both sides of the political fence?

@punkocalypse :) Makes sense
@punkocalypse Question, if you don't mind. What was your reasoning behind the "Backgrounds not available" qualifier? Do you just not enjoy doing them or is there more to it?
@Liberty4Masses If they beleived it and didn't act on it, yes. If I got the impression they might act on it I might call the cops to investigate them, but thats not the same thing.
I managed to learn a lot today without accomplishing anything. Things I've done:
- Setting up Grav as a custom webapp only to realise that the latest Grav requires PHP 7.3.8 which isn't Yunohost's PHP version, as Yunohost follows Debian stretch;
- Setting up Jekyll in Gitlab with a theme I want, but Gitlab CI confused me mid-way;
- Pico CMS as custom webapp in Yunohost was the closest to getting working, but a lot of plugins and themes are outdated;
- Dotclear2 authentication doesn't like Yunohost's LDAP;
I'm really trying not to use WordPress here but I have wasted all day on the above.
I'm also seriously considering ditching Yunohost with how restricted they are with my host.
But for now I've accumulated too much frustration and have to call it a day.
@selfsame As is its non-existence. Ergo everything is technical debt :)
@mngrif They are suprisingly obscure and easily overlooked. Cool religion though.
@freemo Nice. Not that I'll block either - I'm just in favour of techniques like this that give users more control over what content they want to see. Played a big role in me choosing this instance in the first place.
@khird Thank you I agree 100% with you there! Freedom is important to me, and i want that to go as far as possible without it infringing on someone else's.
@dantheclamman Whats the topic, I'll help out if its within one of my fields of expertise.
@emsenn Depends on if the person doing it is correct or not... Some people wil use that phrase as an insult when you are otherwise being rational.. Sadly since the description is accurate for a huge portion of the population it is also often uttered in sincerity. Just depends which one it is whether or not I find it a compliment or not.
