@Meachamus_Prime I suspect the people who falsly accuse others of rape just tend to be "louder". if your going to falsly accuse someone you might as well make it someone rich or famous you can exploit.

As such the ones who make false claims are far more likely to get attention then someone making a legitimate claim against joe blow down the street.

@Meachamus_Prime While there are no shortage of false claims on rape (or liars in general) your conclusions dont seem to be valid.

There is no indication there are any more false claims than int he past. The evidence suggests people feel safer to make claims buth true and false, and that the false claims are likely about as common as they have always been. But I have seen no evidence to really measure the ratio in general.

The truth is the statistics aren't usually wrong. But more often than not people draw the exact opposite conclusion than they should from statistics because they aren't trained int he fallacies. We see this in almost every area of politics and it the central reason that democracy based politics fail, because people are really shitty at creating actionable solutions from data, even when that data seems clear.

@nonlinear Sure thing. Just send an email asking for one to jor.bartels@protowaffle.com

update:

We recently added a new service to the QOTO family of services. We now host a Discourse server are discourse.qoto.org

It is currently empty but will act as a space for discussion around open-source STEM projects or general STEM discussion. It will also act as a mailing list for any project managers who wish to use the service for their projects.

IT compliments our other services well including a GitLab instance open to the general public for open-source STEM projects as well as for our users to host private or personal websites.

We also have a NextCloud server open to the public for open-source STEM projects and individuals to utilize as well.

In the next few weeks we will continue to bring up new services including PeerTube, Pixelfed, FunkWhale, and many more on their way.

@rw Welcome! It will be great to have you Drop me a line anytime if you have questions or just want to chat.

Site etiquette indicates my first toot should be by way of an introduction. Seldom comfortable tooting my own horn (pun intended)* I'll keep this brief(ish).

I am a philosopher and historian based in Sydney and currently a doctoral candidate at the Business School; researching Edmund and his implications for executive leadership.

I chose to undertake my study in a business school, grubby though commercial ends may seem to elevated minds, because Burke was an intensely practical thinker. As he noted:

'‘The End of learning is not knowledge but virtue; as the End of all speculation should be practice of one sort or another… [for] Knowledge is the Culture** of the mind; and he who rested there, would be just as wise as he who should plough his field without any intention of sowing or reaping.'***

In this context, it seems fitting to attempt to apply Burkean research to practical ends.

I am also a passionate advocate for technology reform, which drew me to Mastodon, as I do not think unrestricted access to an individual's data is necessary for the provision of services. , , , , and co. are all demonstrating that FAANG methods are not the only viable way of providing digital connections.

N.B.:
*Thinking intended puns, I am always reminded of the joke about a man who entered a local newspaper's pun contest. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

**Culture in the original sense of ploughing for sowing later.

Here we go, a blog for my long form learning journal, with a Mastodon widget!

@freemo

@M0YNG Well yea, but I didnt see this meme as specific to children either. But I agree, doing science, bad or otherwise, is how you make it good over time with experience.

@Gargron Yea I understood. But given my usage pattern I'd personally find that rather annoying. If I type a username I use the matches that pop up as a confirmation im spelling it correctly (as I almost never know how to spell it). So making sure the closest match is at the top, specifically the exact match, would be critical for how I use it. Otherwise if it didnt show up for some reason (or was far down on the list) I might find myself needing to match up the letters one by one. It would be annoying

@Gargron Maybe im misunderstanding you but I'm not sure that makes any sense. You want to move more precise matches so less precise ones show up instead?

I see why you might do it (since if you types inthe full name autocomplete isnt needed). But when I do it I use it as a visual confirmation that i didnt misspell the name. So it serves a function to me.

@se7en
I am not currently working in the nuclear industry i any way.

@saxnot

@saxnot My profession is basically Data Scientist + EE + CE with a focus on Math, namely in the field of distributed computing, heterogenous computing, statistical analysis, MAchine Learning, Evolutionary Computing, RF design, Regression analysis... honestly, its a long list of things I do and its hard to explain. But that list there is like 80% of it.

I currently run my own company and a few early startups. In the past I was a Consultant for the US Government as well as many private contracts.
