Yep, very much. Words naturally change meaning over time because of gradual misunderstanding or whatever, but in politics, it's rapid and intentional.

@FailForward @freemo

The "mugged" quote originated in the US way back in the latter part of the 20th century.

Words are constantly changing their meanings over time. Political terms are especially susceptible because opponents will often intentionally try to redefine the meaning of terms associated with their rivals, or they coop terms that seem positive for their own use.

Liberal started off meaning classical liberalism (Locke, Hobbs, Jefferson), then, in the US, the left cooped the term to describe themselves, hoping to gain positive vibes for themselves, even though their political philosophy was quite different. Later, the conservatives ran the word "liberal" through the toilet describing every ill on Earth as "liberal", so then the left stopped using "liberal" and started using "progressive", even though their ideas have nothing to do car insurance.

@Pat

This is pretty much the same mechanics as the euphemism treadmill, and I agree.

@FailForward

@FailForward

BTW just a guess here but I suspect whatever side you are on are the "realists" and whatever the other side is is the "dreamers"?

@Pat

All of Freddy Kreugar's dialogue:

"Something something something, Bitch!"

"Its something something time!"

@FailForward

semantic arguments are boring. The definition of liberal you just gave I would call either classically liberal or libertarian. When I see liberal used on its own I see it as synonomous with the left and if a word is needed to be a bit more granular then liberal = neo-liberal.

That said semantics are stupid. Lets just replace the words I used with democrat and republican so there is no problem with quibbling over definitions.

@Pat

@cee

Glad to hear you are out there trying to make a difference, we need as much of that as we can get. Sad that you need to clean up other people's mess at all though.

@Callalily

@freemo @Callalily Oh yeah, this is the Fitzgerald Biosphere and the Great Western Woodlands btw. Most of the region had been severely impacted by drought due to industrial monoculture; so im going to be working with the farmers and other organisations to help rehabilitate the region (lucky the bushfires didnt hit too hard this region last year, but is very prone).

@adidal I dunno what the fuck you are talking about. I am a god damn fucking paragon of tranquility mother fucker!

(joking of course) :)

@FailForward

Conservatism is about fear of the future. Liberalism is about fear of the past.

@Pat

ham radio operator's credo:

1. Be a jerk to everyone you meet

2. Make assumptions about how things work based on the first explanation someone gives you and never change your mind or learn anything more about it for the rest of your career in HAM radio.

3. if someone gives you advice contrary to #2 call them names and insult them until they go away

4. Never do math, numbers are a lie. As long as you can hear someone talking in your radio then your assumptions are validated.

5. Under no circumstances should you actually learn how things work. Simply quote people with credentials and insist your misunderstanding of the quoted text is the only correct one. If someone disagrees with you remember your credentials are automatically the same as the authors, so you are right.

6. Make it a point to never understand the purpose or intent of FT8 and anytime you see anyone mention it make fun of them for not being a real HAM

7. CW is the only acceptable mode of operation, everything else is contrary to the spirit of HAM radio.

8. Only people over the age of 90 are allowed to be HAM radio operators, everyone else is ruining the hobby.

9. Making a joke of any kind should be treated exactly the same as a personal insult. You now have the right to respond to the person as rude as you'd like

My guess

@frank87 Would you like the answer early (ill respond via DM if youd like)
