When meeting a new woman i can hope for one of four outcomes.
1. We dont like eachother at all and go our seperate ways, happy and peaceful forever.
2. We like eachother a little bit and become life long happy friends
3. One of us likes thr othrr alot and its awkward and creepy and painful
4. We both like eachother a lot and have a few months that are thr happiest time one can hope for before one of us dumps the other and its months of misery and pain.

There is a film crew in the office here filming us so I decided to put an Easter egg equation on the wall to see who watching it will catch the reference.

You may defederate for several reasons other than intolerance:

* dont have resources to host a full node
* arent hosting a general social media server but rather one for a private network or for a specific topic
* compliance with regional laws
* to prevent spammy/botnet/rogue nodes
* only want to connect to Tor nodes
* cut off servers that engage in DoS attacks/flooding
* cut off servers where users are allowed to circumvent individual users private bans by allowing users to host many accounts explicitly to counteract private account-level bans

Yes, I see a few flaws. Your premise is wrong and on top of that it isnt mutually exclusive. not all defederation is out of intolerance, and not all federation is tolerance. We are talking about a single group that uses it in those ways is all,

Federating also doesnt mean "tolerates". Having access to information doesnt mean you tolerate it, it only means you are capable of seeing it. If i can see hateful things it doesnt imply i tolerate hateful things.

no it has nothing to do with seeing the content. If your server blocks GAB and you federate with an instance that associates with GAB, then you as a server still cant see GAB, even if a user from over there were to boost the content from GAB you wouldnt see it. So clearly the motivation goes beyond not wanting to see GAB content. The point is to take the voice away from GAB so **others** cant see it
