Hi! Since my #introductions post got buried somewhere, here is another one. I'm a dragon, hear me roar. I'm Bulgarian, speak fluently both Bulgarian and English. Linguistics and IT student. I love singing, appreciate good music and conversations. I like reading and writing in my spare time too. I also game, though terrible it might be. I absolutely love #DoctorWho and #HomeAlone as well as #scifi and #LitRPG I used to draw and still love anything crafty. I am #Blind #OSDD #ChronicallyDepressed and #Misophonic I'm also #plural although this is not expressed much. I wish to keep things private, as much as I can, and all agree on it. I have a #dragon spirit and I am often confused about the meanings of some human things. My brain literally interprets almost everything, so I am going to be asking questions. A lot of them sometimes. I also study #Spanish and #German whenever time allows and my preferred music genre is #hardstyle I also enjoy #coffee and #tea I love British English and accents, although I can both write and speak either standards - American and British. I currently work in HR and I used to work as an event coordinator. That's all! Few! It was a long intro! Follow me, I do not bite.

Hi I’m new to :mastodon: and I see #introduction is a fun thing to do.

I enjoy #modernart, #abstractart, #paintings, #photographs. I love listening to #music including #drumandbass, #dance, #classical, #pop, #punk, #ska, and #alternative. I am learning #crochet and #piano and into sports like #skateboarding, #rollerderby, #squash, and #hockey. I love #learning and #science.

Have a #MSc in #compsci. I make internet #software have better #security. I enjoy #rust but do research with #cpp too.

❤️

OK, language weirdness question.

Someone recently said:

"I just about caught the train."

Did they catch it or not? Perhaps it depends whether you think of English as (one of) your first language(s).

As always, if you're happy to do so I'd be grateful if you'd boost for reach, and to get beyond my circle of followers.

Thank you!

" But once you experience #Mastodon, you suddenly realize just how much advertising, spam, and phishing you are being force-fed. I find Mastodon restful. Like the first time you realized that TV is possible without commercials. Also, because journalists and scientists are leading the charge to Mastodon, my feed seems to reflect a culture of knowledge, even leaning on peer-reviewed citations."

I’m a frickin genius.

Context: my kid is mildly allergic to citric acid and citric fruit. Brings out eczema. And citric acid is in SO many things. And it’s painful checking ingredients lists for it.

This morning I wondered: can my phone OCR the ingredients list and check it?

My first thought was to make a little web app. But there doesn’t seem to be a OCR in web browsers yet.

But I KNOW my phone can get text from images.

When it comes to Duolingo, language teachers have very mixed opinions ranging from being a very effective learning tool to the most wrong way of learning a language.

There are not many people I would prostate myself for, in huge respect and admiration. Except of course Alan, the man who drives the Fresh Fish van. 🐟🐠🐡🦞🦐
Don't think less of me.

This is me moving over to Mastodon.ART. I'm a Finnish UX/UI designer who should feel at home here. I don't have much of an idea what I'll be posting yet, or if I'll be mainly enjoying the creativity of others. My own art is a hobby, which progresses at a glacial pace, but you may end up seeing some of it. #introduction

I see that people with hearing aids are kind of panicky about their hearing aids.. There's someone at my place now who's slightly hard of hearing, so she's got hearing aids. When I needed her to help me a little bit with something outdoors, she was like nonono, it's raining and my hearing aids shouldn't get wet!

I said there was a simple solution then, just take them off for a bit. Oh nonono, she couldn't possibly do that. They need to stay on!

Wtf? They're just hearing aids, man. It's not like your life depends on them. I'm frigging deaf, I'm living proof that not being able to hear isn't going to hurt you. Let alone not being able to hear for 5 minutes. :P

I kind of remember this bit from my own past when I still wore hearing aids. 90% of my time was spent worrying if the battery was still full enough for me to hear something. Fucking things, I should've gone fully deaf sooner.

A population density map of India. This was by far the longest population density map render.

Well, except for furry France, which still holds the record. I should share it here.

mausen ("to mouse") = to steal, to pilfer, to catch mice
mopsen ("to pug") = to steal, to swipe
rentieren ("to reindeer" 😜 ) = to be profitable
fliegen ("to fly") = to fly 🤷

The German word "nee" means "no" (slang for "nein").

The word "ne?" is used like a question tag.

Both combined - "Nee, ne?" - can mean

- I can't believe this is really happening.
- No he didn't, did he?
- That isn't true, is it?
- Are you kidding me?!
- No way!
- That's gotta be a f*cking lie!

Enjoy our language, ne?

The German word "hören" means "to hear". But it has funny relatives:

anhören = to listen
zuhören = to listen (a bit more active than anhören)
umhören = to ask around
abhören = to wiretap, to auscultate
überhören = to not hear
erhören = to hear and react to (eg. a plea or a prayer)
gehören = to belong to
angehören = to be a member of
satthören = to get enough of hearing

Should I rather aufhören*? OK.

Enjoy our language!

*aufhören = to stop
