I managed to get a glimpse of the owner of the nest: Eurasian harvest mouse (Micromys minutus)
Had I cut the goldenrod indiscriminately, this small nest would be gone. Those few plants will stay here, bloom, and spread their evil seeds, but the owner of the nest will keep it's home.
Day one of this year's battle with Canadian goldenrod, Solidago canadensis (a bit late, I know). I decided not to use a brushcutter for a number of reasons. Cutting the plants would leave sharp stumps of stems in the ground. Not that I walk around barefoot, but our dogs, #IdąPsięta, do. Tearing the plants out by hand is easy in most areas, thanks to their shallow roots. It also gives me a chance to think and not remove the few other plants that goldenrod was suppressing. Even the nettles. Nettles are stingy, but nice.
The sign wasn't precise, but yes, there are some goats here. And sheep. And horses. And chicken.
This road leads to civilization. We're not taking it (unless we have to get one of the #IdaPsięta to a vet)
We really didn't want to see this. We were taking a shortcut to get home as quickly as possible, tired of fighting mosquitoes that protected a blueberry field. And then the dogs found this. We were prepared. We had a basket and knives. It took us at some five minutes to gather all those mushrooms, about 20 mosquito bites per person in our forest units of measurement.
The road was dry for a couple of days but now it's back to the way #IdąPsięta like it the most.
