If you are afraid of gaining weight this year, remember to drink wine before each meal.

This takes away the fear. #wineverse

Food for thought from #Beaverland by Leila Phillip: "Until recently, most people, including scientists, have tended to skew toward valuing the #beaver pond over the beaver meadow. By transforming from pond to meadow, the beaver site allows for grasses, then shrubs, then trees to recolonize the area--this disruption brings vitalization, and creates #habitat for creatures like rabbit, #grouse, moose, and deer that need dry land."

At a wildlife rehab facility I met two crows that said, "caw" in a human accent. They said it like a human reading the word "caw" aloud. The tech shook her head and said, "they're making fun of us. People say 'caw' to them all day, so they've started impersonating us." I <3 crows

Curious, gorgeous harbor seal in Seward, #Alaska this morning. 💗

With the rise of self-driving vehicles, it's only a matter of time before we get a country song where a guy's truck leaves him too.

How to slow down scientific progress

"Leo Szilard—the physicist who first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction and who urged the US to undertake the Manhattan Project—also wrote fiction. His book of short stories, The Voice of the Dolphins, contains a story “The Mark Gable Foundation,” dated 1948."

You can see the full thing at this link, but I've also taken a screenshot of an excerpt. 😬 🤔 😢

Someone's been busy.

On December 8 (2022) I noticed this rotten tree had a smallish hole dug out of it.

Today (January 7) the hole has been extended to a channel about eight foot in length.

I'd have said except that's a lot of work in about a month.

Do any mammals make channels in rotting trees like that?

"One of Cobb’s most well-known articles was “Race and Runners” which appeared in 1936. He sought to refute the idea that Jesse Owens, a quadruple gold medalist in the 1936 “Nazi” Olympics, was superior because of African Americans’ innate physical prowess that corresponded to a decreased intelligence."

I feel like comments like "nobody wants to work anymore", and employment numbers in general, need to come with a little star next to them that points to a footnote reminding you that the labor market is being perpetually undercut by prison labor.

If you’re at the right place at the right time, with the right equipment, this is possible.

Last night, with guidance from transit-finder.com/, I positioned myself along the narrow line where the International #SpaceStation would pass between me and the nearly full moon.

I used a Fujifilm X-T4 shooting 4K video through a Celestron 8” SCT to capture the pass. Then, back at the computer this morning, put together these views with PIPP, Registax, and GIMP.

Quite pleased. My best yet.

It's getting better.

Same place as the previous pic, just a day later, slightly different angle.

I'll give $20 to the first person that comes up with a QR bumper sticker that bricks a Tesla

When we walk with Bruno we don't pick tough paths. Now we could take an old, abandoned road through the forest. Some of the trees that grow on this road are at least 20 years old. Older fallen trees often block the way. Some of jump over them, some walk under.
