Properly jaw-dropping moment this evening: an e-mail from my US publisher saying that "since it's a science book", they'll publish Blue Machine WITH METRIC UNITS. So I don't have to convert everything to foot pounds per square elephant. In YEARS of writing for the US, this is the first time I have ever had a hint that there is a world outside feet and inches. @Ruth_Mottram I had some contact with lab animals in my early years, and as a child I had a pet rat that was rescued from a lab. I remember someone introducing guillotines in their lab as a more humane way to kill – compared to previous methods it was. It's so sad that progress requires so much pain. The #UN probe into war abuses in #Ethiopia issued an open call for submissions of info, documentation and evidence related to potential war crimes that took place throughout the war.
The disconnect is real. The open call is in English, a language that few speak in Ethiopia. I understand that there are many constraints, including Ethiopia denying access for investigators. But still, translating the call to languages spoken by war impacted populations is the bare minimum.

I hadn't planned on making this image until later in spring with lime green leaves, but alas there was an opportunity that was too good to pass up.
This veteran hornbeam has bags of character - I just love its shape. The snowstorm lasted about an hour in the dying light of the day.
By morning the snow was gone, and the opportunity had gone. Sometimes you just have to take advantage of a short window.
