“Word problem” in energy arithmetic

Imagine you like blueberries a lot and buy a kilogram of them every week.

In winter you walk to your local supermarket to get them; shipped 10,000 km away and trucked 1,000 km more.

In summer, you go to a fresh producer’s stand at the farmer’s market.

The energy due to shipping turned out to be exactly the same in both caes!

Assume you and the farmer drive the same distance to the market.

Q: How far did you drive your car to the market each way?

On 23 February we will host an online seminar dedicated to the persecution of Roma & Sinti, the history of the so-called Zigeunerlager at Auschwitz II-Birkenau, and the contemporary contexts of functioning of Roma communities.

Czterdzieści minut temu zarobiłem ciasto na i teraz zastanawiam się, czy minęło już te dwadzieścia minut, po których należało je przemieszać.

Me: gonna open this kitchen drawer.

Potato masher: the fuck you will.

I'm delighting in all the fun #Bots that have ditched #Twitter and migrated here ahead of the #API changes tomorrow. Welcome, and don't let your hard work go to waste.👍

Hey, my name ist Laura, I am a math teacher in Switzerland and a mother of two.

I haven't written a single line of code before I was 26, when I taught myself Java because drawing the view within a 3-sphere by hand with spreadsheets doing the calculations was ... hard.

It's been quite the ride since then! I explore Fractals, Cellular Automata, Tesselations, whatever visual math has to offer!

With job and family my time for coding is restricted, mostly I code on the commute.

😊

Of course Mastodon is hard to use. They're really big, for starters, and if you don't have the right ladder even getting on is a challenge. Then they have to be fed a hay bale or a wheelbarrow full of cabbages every hour. And depending on where you use Mastodon, you may be responsible for cleaning up all the droppings.

But once you get over those things, it's really pretty great. Stinky. But great.

Fun story! In the early morning, this coyote would grab a newspaper from a porch in its neighborhood and play with it for a bit. The delivery guy figured it would be better for everyone if the coyote destroyed a free newspaper instead, so he’d toss one into this little park for the coyote to play with.

#2735 Coordinate Plane Closure

3D graphs that don't contact the plane in the closure area may proceed as scheduled, but be alert for possible collisions with 2D graph lines that reach the hole and unexpectedly enter 3D space.

What commonly available, free software #compression scheme yields the best results? By "best" I mean most compressed, not speed or otherwise. I've been using xz -9ev, but if there's something better, I'd like to hear about it.

I saw a meme on tumblr earlier that said the best response to “Can you explain this gap in your resume” is “No I signed an NDA”

@drsueoosthuizen I love that stuff. Do you know what these are at the ends of some strips in Northumberland, the puzzle me and the farmer has no idea either?

I just love the quietness of #landscape #history - the way it unobtrusively, inadvertently, records the daily lives of generations of rural communities. Here, the backward-S curve of a stream shows how its course was shifted* to follow the course of #medieval #ploughteams, each drawn by 8 oxen spanned in pairs, as they cultivated the headlands that ran at right angles across the foot of each #furlong (group of strips) -

* Most probably in the 12th/13th century when...
