I find it extremely comforting thatthese masks are really for super extra safety - since we have been using them in the 2000s no one has been in an emergency where they were necessary (there was one false alarm but better safe than sorry)

And good news! This morning I passed my exam and successfully and correctly put on my mask in well under 40 seconds. In the coming years I am allowed to work underground again (including tours!) See pic for proof. Safety is not flattering 🤪

An important addition to the pile of evidence that suggests some #insects are in decline. And that may destabilize #ecosystems 😬🐛 washingtonpost.com/world/2023/

@mmasnick

Btw on death threats. I have about 3x the followers here that I ever did on Twitter.

I wrote an article laying out an argument for a $2/gallon gas tax and shared it on Twitter and here.

On Twitter, I immediately had a half-dozen DMs threatening my safety, about a dozen more just generally being obnoxious.

Here? Some debate, some counterarguments, some "you didn't considers." No DMs. No violence. All well-meaning and intending to further the discussion.

🇬🇧 Users in the UK will no longer be able to share or see images of migrants crossing the Channel in small boats.
Under a new #OnlineSafetyBill amendment, online platforms will have to proactively remove such content.

More strange Mastodon reporting. This time from @thurrott, who claims "I’ve been using Mastodon since December, but the interaction there is almost non-existent compared to Twitter."

Dude, you follow 22 people. Try following more people. The "non-existent" interaction is *up to you*.

I've found WAY MORE interactions and engagement here than I ever had on Twitter. Plus fewer death threats.

All of these hot takes about how Mastodon is too hard to use for mass adoption are missing the point entirely. We are not some tech startup trying to "disrupt" the social media ecosystem. We don't have VCs breathing down our necks pushing for continuous growth at all costs. We're just regular people out here building communities.

If people don't like Mastodon and decide to go back to Twitter, that's fine. They are not commodities to be exploited. If people like Mastodon and decide to stay, that's great! They are going to be more invested in the community because they are actually deriving real value from it.

If there's one thing the global capitalist system cannot fathom is that value can exist that is not fungible with monetary value. There are plenty of ways to create value for people that do not involve buying and selling. In fact the whole notion that value = monetary value is a relatively recent innovation in human history.

I'm not saying that capitalism doesn't have its benefits, but our minds have become so warped by its zero-sum game vision of the world that it's easy to believe that generating profits is the only thing that matters. We may have to play that game to justify our existence on this planet, but there's a whole world of value to be found outside of it. Just because we're forced to play the game doesn't mean the game is all there is.

I've spent a lot of time convincing my kids to look for sources. Where did some bit of information come from, how to think about it. But I am a super minority in teaching that to them. 'Regular' internet users already have no such sense, how could they be taught to check.

if you understand that for a certain demographic of people, accountability is considered offensive, a lot of things start to make more sense.

For today's #ThickTrunkTuesday, I have a very special tree.

This is an ancient hornbeam tree that is about 700 yrs old.

It looks like two trees, but it's actually a single tree that has begun to compartmentalise in the latter part of its life. I explain more about this below.

I'd love to go back to shoot this again in the fog. Here's hoping things align the next time I have an opportunity to get up to this remarkable forest.

I've probably told you that I'm a hobby mobilephonephotographer. I have an old Motorola with a not so good camera and make the best out of it. I have to be lucky (which I am here in Ireland, of course, the light is amazing) and quick to get a good shot. This is why I'm so excited about my very first Robin today! The sweet little fella sat in the bush and then came closer step by step, it was such a gift!
